In the Judean desert near the Dead Sea 200 soldiers and air units search for Dr. James Pike missing since Monday. Officials say the 56 year old former California Episcopal bishop is likely not alive after his wife left him to seek help from a mountain position.
Senator Everett Dirksen rests after removing a cancerous lung tumor at Walter Reed. Doctors described the four fifths inch tumor as malignant but localized and said no further surgery or treatment is planned. Senate duties are temporarily filled by Hugh Scott as Dirksen’s condition allows.
Public hearings in Region VII Oklahoma ahead of a report titled An Appraisal of the Water and Related Land Resources Region VIII will be held Sept 23 26 in Eufaula Okmulgee Okemah and Wewoka. The event will involve OW RB executive director Forrest Nelson and a panel of federal state and local agency representatives. The hearings aim to gather public input for the regional water resource plan and the statewide strategy.
An Ada man suffered minor injuries in a one car crash on W Main night, driving east in the 800 block, ran off the road hitting signs and a tree, treated and released. Total crashes for the period reach three with a second afternoon wreck and multiple court dispositions following.
Ada City Council approved turning downtown parking lot duties to the Southern Oklahoma Development Association and backed a work study to employ East Central College students. The body nixed a right turn on red proposal pending legal review after opposing votes.
Ada resident Velma Irene Peters suffered a neck injury in a two car crash on Tuesday afternoon. Grace Gilda Stoup of Konawa rear ended Peters’ car while stopped at a red light in the 100 block of West 12th. Stoup posted a $10 bond for following too closely. Several others pleaded guilty or were fined for related offenses in court, including Curtis Franklin Oscar Pettigrew Milburn Buck Thomas Jerry Cagle Larry Trantham Rich ard Byrd Jess Campbell and Woodford Lynch.
A federal grand jury indicted four men including James J. Ryan president of Community National Life Insurance Co. of Tulsa on fraud counts. They allegedly obtained over 500000 in loans by concealing that policies used as collateral had no cash surrender value. Other defendants include Satiris Fassoulis Lionel Reisler and Sanford Rafsky.
Mr and Mrs Patton face a comical sequence of farm mishaps regarding breakfast eggs. A shirt is eaten by a goat, one hen on strike, and a snake in the nest leading to a rough encounter with a shovel. The tale ends with the Pattons questioning whether the breakfast gem is worth the trouble.
In Newport News a 37 year old man grabbed a bank deposit bag and fled pursued by bystanders. He jumped into a car driven by Detective Lt. John Epling who was enlisted as the getaway driver.
The broomcorn harvest in the Lindsay Maysville area still needs cutters. The Oklahoma State Employment Service in Ada says about 150 cutters are needed in the region. Edward E. Redpath, manager of the local office, noted that anyone interested in going to the harvest.
A thunderstorm drenched Union Valley with rain as Doug Kretsinger’s Hereford herd faced tragedy. About 12:30 p.m. Wednesday a bolt struck under a bois d arc tree killing 19 cattle, leaving seven others affected and five orphan calves. no insurance covered the loss.
Oklahoma City labor dispute widens as the Coalition for Civic Leadership calls for a downtown boycott and unionization of low paid city workers. The group targets City Manager Oldland and Mayor Norick after a closed meeting, urging monitoring of downtown commerce and mass rebiring of fired strikers only individually.
