At 85 Hubert Earl Higedon shows tireless energy as a local builder, photographer, painter, teacher, and radio pioneer. He helped construct Ada landmarks, ran a grocery and service station, and now pursues bottle collecting and rabbit farming with wife Violet.

Stonewall Faces Water Shortage Six Wells Dry

Stonewall residents face strict water rules as six of seven wells are dry and the remaining one runs at a minimum rate. City officials impose irrigation and car washing bans with penalties for water waste while awaiting potential new water sources.

Fitzhugh Opens New School Building With Open House

Fitzhugh school will hold a Friday night open house from 7 30 to 9 30 p m to showcase its new building. Superintendent Fletcher Watson notes the $33 000 investment includes furnishings and the community gains a large space from a redesigned structure using parts of the old building.

Teacher Changes Mark Opening of Pontotoc County Schools

The Pontotoc County school term starts with several teacher changes. All county schools except Ada begin Monday. Ada city schools start Tuesday. At Yeager, Alpha Tilley replaces M R Tucker. at Galey, Tucker and Mary Turner replace Wayne Craig and Leonora Parsons. Edna Mae Hart hired at Colbert.

Cemetery Clean Up Boosts Lightning Ridge Community Site

Lightning Ridge residents joined a Hart Home Demonstration Club sponsored cleanup to beautify the local cemetery. Volunteers praised cooperative effort and reported a very successful one day project with many residents helping, noting the impact of shared work on the area.

Masons Plan Sept Reunion at McAlester for Past Grand Masters

Local Masons organize the Past Grand Master's Reunion of the Oklahoma Grand Lodge at Indian Consistory in McAlester September 5 to 8. About 600 of 2,200 area Masons belong to the Consistory with Ada and other towns sending many delegates. The program includes a musical opening, public procession, and Osceola Four. Miss Beverly Hutcheson will portray Miss Liberty. Degree work runs September 6 to 8.

Prussic Acid in Stock Feed Takes Toll of Cattle

STILLWATER Okla The worst prussic acid poison ing since 10 years is hitting Oklahoma beef and dairy cattle. Dr B G Heller of Oklahoma A M College reports widespread losses with one southern farmer losing 40 head. Poison forms in drought stressed feed crops and kills animals within 5 to 10 minutes. Damaged feeds can retain the toxin after curing and baling. Principal sources include Johnson grass flax tree leaves and sorghums and sudans. No effective first aid exists.

County Sees Surge in Two Summer Elections Registrations

Pontotoc County reports 3 499 registrations across 57 precincts for the summer primaries, per county registrar C O Hunt. He notes the total nears twice the expected turnout, attributed to new residents and a few required re registrations due to precinct changes.

Tree-Cutter Is Pontotoc County's New Lumberjack

A new mechanical lumberjack, dubbed the spaceship by Ada workers, is built by Elwood Kingery of Kingery Drilling Co. in Ada. The machine can clear timber far faster than manual cutting, mirroring a McCormick design.
