Jail's History Wins For It Distinction As 'Most Escaped'
The Pontotoc County jail may be the county's most-escaped from jail, with five escapes since 1966 plus inmates who bolted during transport. Escapes stem from jail design and lax security, including windowed cells, makeshift rope routes, hacksaws, and improvised lockpicks. Notable escapee Emmett Ray McCarthy fled twice in six months, using a jail-made knife and roof routes, while others devised clever methods from tin can keys to wire hooks. the jail's vulnerabilities persist despite guard and sheriff efforts.
