Jail's History Wins As Nation's Most Escaped Jail
The Pontotoc County jail may be the most escaped-from jail in the country with Sheriff Burl Griffin recalling five escapes since 1966. Notable episodes include Emmett Ray McCarthy's two jail breaks aided by a jail-made knife and a rope of blankets. Other inmates used hacksaws, improvised lockpicks, or theft of jail keys during moments of oversight.
