Ahloso Home Demonstration Club’s project to fund a 32 by 12 foot velvet curtain for the school gym culminated in a profitable finish. Starting with Fun Night and a chili supper, the group raised funds, paid a $300 down payment, and saw profits from a fall baked chicken dinner, totaling gains that covered the remaining balance and interest.
In Pontotoc County the Ada Aerial Spray Company pilot S. M. Shepard argues spray pilots can fly safely without recklessness. He says flying is a life calling, requires knowing aircraft and personal limits, and he enjoys the air more than the ground.
Oklahoma quail hunters may enjoy the best third season since 1951, says Dr. Fred Baumgartner, zoologist at Oklahoma A&M College. He notes overall Oklahoma conditions show a substantial increase in quail this year after a late nesting season caused by poor winter feed, with summer rains yielding good feed crops.
Pontotoc County Farm Bureau at Fitzhugh School set a plan for voluntary retirement of 10 percent of productive farmland, about 40 million acres, funded by a 20.5 percent levy on gross agricultural income and federal aid. Rental payments would average $10 per acre. the move aims to reduce surpluses and sustain soil reserves for future needs. Senator Kerr outlined his agriculture program during the meeting attended by over 100 people.
Senator Kerr urges retirement and improvement programs for acreage and highlights farm price issues. He notes agriculture makes up 30 percent of the population but only 6 percent of national income and says farm prices are set in Washington. He pledges to push a 90 percent basics support restoration and 290 percent supports in Congress next session.
Dr. O. D. Duncan of Oklahoma A&M told Oklahoma State Grange members in Enid that agriculture faces a coming Golden Age driven by innovation. He warned the industry must assume new responsibilities to meet future deficits rather than surpluses.
Oakman School held a pie supper and cake walk during Open House on Friday night October 21. Principal J M Nance reports total receipts of 68 dollars with about 100 attendees touring classrooms decorated in Halloween colors and displays of pupil work.
A combined 4-H and FFA land and range judging contest will be held in Pontotoc County on Tuesday November 1. Edd Roberts from Oklahoma A&M will conduct a land and range school in the morning. Contestants meet at 9 30 a.m. at the county courthouse with assistance from the local Soil Conservation Service and the Pontotoc County Soil Conservation District board.
