Vanoss vocational agriculture students test milk for butterfat content using a milk meter system. Instructors Pat Gallup and Clem Stone explain the monthly test counts each cow’s yield for a dairy herd, aiding individual cow data beyond bulk tank totals.
Pontotoc County pecan growers warn 1961 harvest will be one of leanest in memory. Trees show widespread barren yields, with some predicting as low as half a crop. Factors blamed include insects, weather, and Hurricane Carla, while shellers hold a surplus keeping prices low nationwide. The state overall expects near 20 million pounds, but Pontotoc faces a poor season amid falling local prices.
Stonewall High School sophomore Tom Crabtree, a 4 H swine project participant, built three farrowing chutes with his own hands and tools. Influenced by professional handler Bruce Carter, he designed a system to confine sows during farrowing, reducing pig losses by about two per litter. His three sows are due in December, and the project reflects his focused, businesslike approach to swine tending.
Louie Mashier of Ada was chosen as chairman of the Ponto to County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee at the recent ASC delegates convention. A. A. Bryant was named vice chairman and Marion Willoughby also joined the committee along with alternates Cager Hisaw Jr. and B. B. Ownbey. Terms run one year from Nov. 1 and duties cover policy and decisions on national farm programs at the county level.
