Small grain s and bermudagrass can be profitable together says Dr Layay Croy agronomist with the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station Wheat planted in bermudagrass sod yields near the same as clean filled fields of the same soil type Combining wheat rye barley or oats with bermudagrass may be the most profitable use for bermudagrass pasture Careful management prevents pit falls such as competition from cool season annual grasses which can be controlled in fall by disking or by paraquat at one fourth pound per acre Wait until most annual grasses have germinated usually sometime in October Disking or paraquat use from October 10 to 20 should work If annual grasses are not controlled they will compete with small grain in spring and reduce yields Sod seeded grains can be grazed to avoid problems Planting time around October 10 to 20 after grass control Short bermudagrass helps planting A hoe type drill works well for drilling into sod Seeding rate around 70 to 75 pounds per acre because sod seedling tilting differs Nitrogen fertilizer may be increased slightly Starter fertilizer 15 20 pounds each of N P K drilled with seed Top dressing 60 to 90 pounds actual N per acre for good yields If winter is dry or grain prices are weak use lower N top dressing level Adjust fertilizer based on price prospects and conditions.
