Long Service Rail Piece From 1684 Preserved in Lowell
A section of old English rail rolled in Liverpool in 1684 and laid on the Boston and Lowell railroad in 1896 was presented to railroad commissioners. In 1997 the rail was moved from a Lowell yard, given black paint and a gold inscription detailing its history, and placed on the web. Accompanying the rail are three English chairs occupying their original positions. The rail has shown little wear after more than 100 years of service, and its under-part trussing between the chairs is notable.
