Ada gets dial phones with new building and robot switch

The Ada telephone system advances as J J Bollinger Construction wins the contract to build a new dial telephone building in the 100 block of West Fourteenth Street with completion aimed for January 1957. All 7,200 phones will switch to dial, requiring pole and wire rearrangement and staff retraining. rural users will keep local calls.

Pontotoc County 4 H workers head to Kansas City for the American Royal Exposition in an expense paid educational trip. The group includes Frankye Sullivan Fitzhugh Darrel Bryant and two county agent staff members. Sponsored by the Ada Chamber of Commerce and Pontotoc County Home Demonstration Council, selections are based on full 4 H records.

Pecan Growers See Strong Year Across the County

Teachers Eat Have Fun At Big Banquet

More than 500 Pontotoc County teachers and spouses attended the Teachers Appreciation Banquet at East Central State College’s Student Union. The event honored long service and dedication with humorous awards, toastmaster Harvey J. Lambert, and speaker Louie E. Throgmorton, while sponsors from Ada civic clubs funded each dinner.

Fitzhugh 4-H Winners Take Asa Hutchinson Awards

James E. Lucas 11 and Frankye Sullivan 16 of Fitzhugh win the Asa Hutchinson awards for top 4-H boy and girl at the county fair. Lucas posts 2 grand champions 3 champions 11 firsts 5 seconds 3 thirds 2 fifths with multiple breed and project wins. Sullivan earns 6 firsts in girls competition.

Oakman Homecoming Set for Sunday October 9

Oakman community plans an annual homecoming on Sunday October 9 with an all day service and dinner on the ground. Residents are invited to attend and bring a basket lunch.

Davis Wins National NFA Public Speaking Championship

William Ware Davis, a Napier High School senior from Ada, won first place in the New Farmers of America public speaking contest at the national NFA convention in Atlanta from October 3 to 6. His speech title was What the NFA Means to be.
