After 32 years the Pontotoc County Free Fair opens in a rebuilt complex funded by a November bond issue. New livestock show barn and arena, modern admin building, and improved walkways, parking, and restrooms replace seven old frames auctioned last spring.
Two Ada men dominate the Holdenville Bull Testing Station standings with top Angus gains of 4.7 and 4.05 pounds daily. Dr H D Hall also leads a six bull Angus pen averaging 3.72 pounds. Hereford bulls, pens and other growers from Carlton Corbin Murray Corbin and Ned Biffle contribute to the 146 bulls, weighing events set for November and a December 9 sale.
Pontotoc County Head Start projects face new state rules demanding school district control of funds and certification. Oklahoma Education Department officials threaten tighter oversight, while local leaders seek compromise to keep programs operating beyond this summer.
Oklahoma Retail Jewelers Association launches Operation Angel to gather aged or unwanted watches statewide. Jewelers will recondition all donations and distribute gifts to youths through local charities and state agencies with receipts to donors.
The Ada Cemetery Commission met with Donald Swaim of Evanston Illinois expert in cemetery planning. They discussed a planned development for the new Rosedale Cemetery section including a main drive landscaping and lot sizing. Swaim praised the cemetery noting the chapel entrance gates upkeep and mowing. The Perpetual Care Fund totals 56978 with lots priced 40 60 and 75 and 35 grave opening closing fee. One fourth of proceeds goes to the fund invested in government securities.
Mrs Bob Hatcher laughed at women who sprayed hair with sprays not for hair until she used Faultless Fabric Finish on her hair. The result left her hair stiff and white and she realized it was not hair spray.
Pontotoc County will be represented by 3 4 H members at the American Royal 4 H Conference in Kansas City October 14 to 17. Attending are Geneva McCullar Vanoss Stephanie McCullar Vaness and Roger Bates Byng. The event will draw about 600 4 H members from Oklahoma Missouri Kansas and Iowa with a schedule of tours exhibitions and meals including a GM lunch for the boys.
County extension reports a strong pecan crop with many entries likely in cakes cookies and pies. Readable recipes included coconut pecan pie and nutty cookies with step by step mixing baking and topping instructions.
Valley View Hospital in Ada Oklahoma awards Yarbro Construction low bid of 1 177 000 for a new three story wing plus 264 000 for equipment. The facility will include 38 646 square feet with 10 intensive care beds and a circular end for ICU monitoring. Construction to start after Washington review with a 400 day timeline.
