Berlin reports heavy overnight British air raid on Hamburg and Stettin causing civilian casualties. German forces claim anti air fire repelled attempts on Berlin and say eight major radio stations will shut at 8 15 p m to avoid guiding raiders.
Low Oct 1 A squadron of four cannon Hurricanes attacked eight German motor torpedo boats off the French coast. The craft were set afire and smoking. some crew were shot overboard. British raids hit Boulogne and Calais areas through mist.
Clinton Oklahoma October 1 local officials said John Calvin Butler a 24 year old ex convict formerly of Anadarko was charged with murder in the death of Bruce Rainey former Weatherford police chief whose body was found July 2 in a roadside pit Prosecutor G C Loving said Butler admitted being present at the slaying but denied firing the fatal shot He said he had been hired by two others to help and was promised 100 but received only part of the money.
Patrolman Jim Cor of Ada moved to Atoka while Patrolman Charles L. Reese from Atoka takes his place in Ada. Charles Williams, recovering from major surgery, transferred from this area to Watonga.
An unmasked bandit armed with a revolver robbed the Security State Bank of $2,300 in OBE CITY Upshur county Texas and fled with a companion waiting in an automobile. Cashier J. W. Manns and his wife were inside when the robber ordered them to raise their hands.
The Moscow talks end in three days with the United States and Great Britain pledging to meet Soviet needs for war supplies in exchange for Russian raw materials. Stalin thanks the Allies as the Soviet communique cites mutual understanding and resolve against the Nazi threat.
Berlin reports indicate a German offensive east of the Dnieper in Ukraine is progressing with successes. Meanwhile German artillery hit industrial facilities in Leningrad and bombers targeted Moscow. In Ukraine an armored division east of Dnieperopetrovsk seized Russian batteries and another division destroyed many Russian units northward. Secretary Ickes told a Senate committee that the oil conservation program was gravely handicapped by a claim there was no shortage on the eastern seaboard. He cited a survey of 188 companies showing only 5,192 tank cars available, countering John J. Pelley of the Association of American Railroads who claimed 20,000 cars could be mobilized.
Production resumes at one Detroit plant while 20 000 auto workers stay idle at Briggs Plymouth and Chrysler plants due to strikes. Dodge dispute centers on ventilating paint booths. In Pittsburgh eight hotels face a 2000 worker walkout demanding 15 to 20 percent raises cutting room service.

Oklahoma City October 1 Governor Phillips said he is investigating reports that Chairman Jerry Ledbetter issued unauthorized game warden commissions. The law requires warrants be signed by the warden and issued by the game and fish department. He aims to ensure no sporter gains advantage observing laws. Ledbetter unavailable for comment.
The 1942 drivers licenses went on sale Wednesday morning at the county tag agent office in the 100 block on West Twelfth Street. Licenses must be purchased before January 1 or motorists will face a new driving examination. Those without a 1941 license must also pass a driving test before buying a 1942 license.
Delayed AP dispatches reveal a large, well equipped U S army contingent in Iceland commanded by Maj Gen Charles H Bonesteel and under Major Gen H C Curtis. The force includes regulars and volunteers with Garand rifles and equipment like skis and snow shoes. Disembarkation was completed September 17 joining Marines and air units for defense.
