Reports from pecan growers buyers and the county agent describe a confusing year. A spring freeze lowered nut quantity while a fall glitch damaged many nuts. Native pecans are plentiful but mostly faulted. papershells are fewer but generally higher quality, with Stuart varieties dominating. Some trees and farms fared well while others failed to harvest.
Harold G. Wingard of Rofs is named a director of the Blue River Conservancy District by District Judge W. J. Monroe. He joins B. Walls of Milburn and civil engineer Bruce C. Bradford on the newly formed board, with Wingard owning 190 acres and leasing 600 acres in the Blue River watershed.
Mrs. Gertie Langford and Ira Goodpasture, siblings and former Pontotoc County residents, perished in a Los Angeles traffic accident Saturday morning. Services held in California. Langford buried in San Francisco, Goodpasture in Portersville. The Goodpasture family moved to Pontotoc around 1912. both had lived in California for years, she in Linwood and he in Portersville.
County residents are urged to apply for special license tags. The process requires presenting your title and paying the fee. Applications accepted 9 to 12 and 1 daily at East Main Ada on Saturday. Regular 1958 tag sales begin December 11.
Four county 4 H club members will attend the state 4 H club congress in Oklahoma City during Thanksgiving holidays. Regular delegates are Carolyn Coffey Latta and Jonard Barton Fitzhugh. Mike Lucas Roff and Wanda Young Fitzhugh are honorary delegates to the national congress in Chicago and will proceed there after the state event. The state congress opens Thanksgiving Day afternoon and closes Saturday morning.
In Wilson, a resident baked a pie for Monday supper but left town Sunday. Upon return the pie vanished, turning up as a gun dumped prize in a comic mix up. The town tally shows Wilson netted 105.45 dollars despite the pie mischief.
Future Farmers of America and 4-H club boys from across the county gathered Wednesday morning at Vanoss for a land judging and rente pant identification school and routes. The event began at 9 with an instruction period, then a lunch break, followed by field judging contests. Co sponsors were Pontotoc County Soil Conservation District and Shipe's Shoes.
Stonewall High School swept top honors in the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Ada Junior Chamber of Commerce. Leslie McGalliard won first place, Jackie Ann Waldrovs took third, and Judy Hackler of Horace Mann School placed second in Ada Friday night at Horace Mann Auditorium.
The Ada Christmas Pageant returns December 3 in Wintersmith Park amphitheatre with a sheltered setting replacing Norris Stadium. King Herod Roman soldiers Mary Joseph and Child Christ star in a living, songful telling, using a new presentation technique for a flawless production.
