Veteran grower Granville Montgomery leads a split season with bottom land producing bumper pecans while upland plots lag. Frost and moisture timing shaped a year of uneven results, but Montgomery’s acreage near Pickett Corner shows notably strong yields amid a statewide pattern.
Pickett residents gather at the school for their annual pie supper. Proceeds support Christmas Tree funds and future Yuletide parties. Raymond Robbins acts as auctioneer, helping raise 152 dollars for the event sponsored by the Pickett Home Demonstration Club.
A Frisco area report notes a new breakfast dish created by Mrs. Simon Patton. Mrs. Georgia Barnes hurriedly prepares Cream of Wheat for her husband Mr. Barnes and their son Grover to speed them to work, stirring until thick.
Ada Chamber of Commerce reports completion of plans for the 1954 Christmas Pageant to be held Monday December 6 in Ada’s downtown. The event, themed with stronger Roman elements, is produced by church leaders and laymen with the retail division sponsoring.
County pecan growers are reminded that the state annual Pecan Show occurs December 7 8 in Pauls Valley. County agent C H Hailey asks exhibitors to bring pecans to his office by December 4 for transport to the event. Premiums will be paid for all varieties including paper shells natives and walnuts. A pound of nuts per category counts as an exhibit. In year about 25 growers attended last year and organizers hope to exceed that turnout.
AHLOSO closes another top grade tourney with 57 teams competing. Principal J C Trease calls it the best in five years as weathers stayed fine and crowds packed the gym each evening. Last Friday Jesse beat Colbert 21 20 to win the Class B girls title. Colbert won the boys division.
A district court jury acquits James Speights of first degree rape by reason of insanity after about two hours of deliberation. Substantial testimony was heard Monday and Monday night in a packed courtroom before the verdict was returned at 2 30 p m.
Moore county appoints new tag agent who succeeds Clyde Kaiser, taking office Friday. He retains Christine Linker and Doris Sullivan from Kaiser staff. Born in Roff, he moved to Ada, worked at a cement plant, farmed near Fitzhugh for 15 years, and then operated the county courthouse concession stand for seven years.
The paper corrects a prior notice stating the Frisco pie supper will be held on November 29 instead of November 9. Mrs. Simon Patton notified the WEEKLY office of the error and the correction is published with an apology for the mistake.
Rural residents of the county may attend a one day conference on Oklahoma's rural health at the University of Oklahoma Student Union Building next Monday. Dr Ray V Northrip says the event offers discussion and idea exchange for rural health issues with transportation provided and only meal costs.
The 1954 trapping season runs December 1 to January 31, 1955. Species allowed include badger civet fox mink muskrat opossum raccoon red fox and skunk with license rules: resident professional 50 dollars for over 20 traps resident amateur 1.25. hunting license required over 16. land trapping by owner or tenant exempt. reports due within 30 days after season ends. No season for beaver otter. no closed season for bobcat coyote house cat rabbits or wolf.
County tag agent Ed Moore urges Pon totoc County car owners to reserve their preferred tag numbers. Owners should bring their title and payment to secure the number, enabling staff to process licenses ahead of January tag sales and ease year start rush.
The Oakman tournament runs December 13 through 16. Entries have been mailed with a December 1 deadline for return.
