Drivers forgot to use lights after Memorial Day while the Highway Patrol urged all motorists to keep lights on. Across the county and state there were instances of dead batteries from cars left with lights off after parking on city streets.
W. J. Barnes in a Frisco peach orchard killed a large snake with a .22 rifle after finding one in a tree. A second copperhead-like snake struck his chest while he rested against a broken tree limb days later, fangs embedding in his overalls before Barnes killed it.
Oklahoma high school juniors and seniors from Allen High School returned Friday after a five day stay at Sequoyah State Park in northeast Oklahoma. Sponsors and chaperones accompanied the group as they fished swam rode stagecoaches hay rides and watched movies. Beverly West Paula West Shirley West Pat Malone and many others joined in the trip alongside Mr. and Mrs. Larry Darbison Mrs. George Harris Qton Hodges and Beverly West flying to Tulsa to meet the group.
About 500 area residents attended an Ada open house at the armory Sunday afternoon to view weapons and gear of Company C, First Battle Group. Demonstrations included MGs, 105 recoilless rifle, mortars, rifles, grenades, and a helicopter from the Oklahoma City Army Reserve. A field kitchen tent offered coffee and doughnuts as crowds observed firing demonstrations and equipment details.
Vanoss Alumni Association members met at Center School Tuesday to finalize plans for the eighth annual Vanoss High School reunion and banquet. The June 23 event at the high school will honor attendees with prizes for the oldest teacher and the farthest traveling alumnus. A next meeting is set for June 29 at Center School at 7:30 p.m. to complete final arrangements.
Fantotoe County coons are going to hide from hunters again this week. Theyve organized another event to take place at Adar on June 3. The coon dog field trials invite everyone except bulldogs and airedales theyre not sporting enough. The event is sponsored actually. Continued on Page Two Rites Are Held For Mrs. Nova Lou Kirby Here Last rites for Mrs. Novie Lou Kirby were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the First Methodist Church Ada. She died after several weeks illness. She was born August 16, 1884 in Sulphur Springs Texas and came to Ada in 1906. She was married to Joe H. Kirby in Texas November 8, 1903. She was a member of First Methodist Church and Ada Chapter Order of East Jern Star. She leaves three brothers J H Gay and C A Gay Ada and C H Gay Tulsa and several nieces and nephews.
In a district courtroom recount overseen by Judge Jono Boyce McKee, Atkinson gains five votes over Raymond Gary across 53 precincts. Final recount totals show Gary at 5,483 and Atkinson at 3,783, with minor variances from runoff figures.
Allen County Chamber of Commerce heard Dick Colbert of Colbert Dairy speak on the dairy industry at their regular monthly meeting. The gathering at Mom's Cafe followed several prior agricultural discussions as the chamber seeks to boost local farming interest.
Pontotoc County schools report a net gain of 152 students across 19 districts. Total enrollment reaches 6,079 with Ada, McLish, and Francis showing notable increases. Districts listed include Allen, Vanoss, Bying, Ada, Fitzhugh, Galey, Union Hill, and others with student counts and district designations.
Pontotoc County Farm and Ranch Club schedules a field day on June 14. The tour departs Ada Livestock Sale Barn at 1 30 p m and visits Escar Myers, Frank Dotson, Glen McDaniel, and Sherwood O Neal ranches to view native and improved pastures. Neal Stidham, Kenneth Yoakum and Dick Chiles of Stillwater join pasture specialists, ending with a Sherwood O Neal ranch barbecue.
The Pontotoc County Soil and Water Conservation district enters the 16th annual Goodyear competition to choose the nation’s top 52 districts. District chairman Jimmie C. Thomas says districts’ activities from May 1, 1962 to April 30, 1963 will be weighed. A state winner will be named by a committee of agricultural readers. The grand award is an expense paid vacation study trip to Arizona in December 1963 for one district official.
A Ada area storm pack left Fittstown strewn with debris Friday night as straight winds of about 70 mph toppled trees and roofs. Damage is estimated around 2 000 dollars with homes of Mary Holden and Walter Graper among those affected. Civil defense warned residents, sounding a whistle and directing people to shelters as the storm moved from Sulphur toward the northeast.
Emma Reeves died at 2 30 a m Tuesday in Ada Oklahoma She was born Emma Gibson in Whitewright Texas She lived in multiple Texas and Oklahoma towns with her husband pharmacist William A Reeves They had two sons and a daughter and she was active in First Methodist Church Golden Age Club and music circles Funeral by Criswell Funeral Home in Ada.
Ott Burnett cattleman and rancher died Sunday at his home near Connerville Oklahoma Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the Tishomingo High School auditorium with Carl Rogers officiating Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery Ardmore Chapman Funeral Home handled arrangements Burnett came to Oklahoma in 1940 from Iowa Park Texas bringing 200 Hereford cattle that formed a notable herd He later developed an impressive Quarter Horse bloodline Survivors include his wife four brothers and four sisters
Cheryl Melton reports Vanessa seniors returned home last Thursday after seven days at Rockaway Beach Missouri. They stayed near Lake Taneycomo and packed a summer’s worth of activities including swimming boating fishing horseback riding and leisure. A birthday party for Charlotte Chilcoat was held, and en route home the group visited Roaring River trout farm. Attendees include Sally Thomas Cheryl Melton Nora Stinson Gray and many classmates with sponsors M P Hatchett James L Barnes Leroy Huddleson Billy Bob Ashley Avery League Ray Sliger and Pat Gallup.
More than 2,000 Oklahoma 4H Club members attend the state Roundup at Oklahoma State University as winners are named in public speaking and demonstrations. Pontotoc County recipients include Harold Swink and Peggy Heimer among blue ribbons, with several others listed for red ribbons. District officers were elected for one-year terms, naming Ronald Minson as Northeast president and Bob Sherrer as Southeast president, among others.
