Emory Threlkeld, new to beekeeping, reports the family cucumber operation is thriving after a year with honeybees. He notes the bees helped produce their best crop yet, while some bee stands failed in winter. The venture centers on pollination for 70 acres of cucumbers and a surplus of honey.
Westview Baptist Mission of the First Baptist Church in Ada starts an expansion to handle about twice its current 107 members. Rev. Leonard Webster and Dr. Roy C. McClung presided at the groundbreaking at Nabors's residence. Construction began Monday and should finish by late July or early August adding eight classrooms a baptistry and a larger auditorium.
Mrs. Anna Young of Ada and Mrs. Lulu Darnell of Tulsa organized an Old Timer's Reunion at Magnolia Park in Stonewall. The event drew about 200 guests, with attendees from Oklahoma and beyond including Dr. B. F. Sullivan from Barnsdall and out of state visitors from Wichita Kansas El Paso Texas and San Diego California.
In Frisco two women face venomous snakes near their homes. Mrs Eva Hitt narrowly avoids a water moccasin that bites her shoe, then a second woman Mrs Annie Forehand shoots a large chicken snake while berry picking. Neighbors note nearby, nonpoisonous bites may occur.
Pontotoc county citizens have added 216 155 to their personal savings as Series E and H bonds since the year began. The figure equals 31 percent of the county 1956 savings bond goal of 700 000. Bond chairman Ralph Hays cites indestructibility and easy replacement of lost or stolen bonds, citing a soldier who removed his wallet during the Battle of the Bulge.
IRS official Hershel S. Ballard announces a new law allowing farmers to claim refunds of the 2 cent federal gasoline tax for farm use. First refunds after June 30 cover the first six months of 1956. later refunds span July 1 to June 30.
Lee Langley faced a corn setback along Boggy as white grubs caused stalks to fade. County agent Cy Hailey reviewed the field and a university entomologist confirmed grubs feeding on bases of corn. The pest likely originated from lush Johnson grass, but Langley had not chosen a treatment by the last report.
Two longtime Ada postal workers Logan Cornelius and M E Qualls retired after lengthy service. Cornelius carried Route 3 for about 17 years with a total post office career near 36 years while Qualls served as a mail clerk for 44 years. Their colleagues at the Ada post office honored them with Honorary Recognition Certificates.
