A "select list" of J P Morgan and Co clients including Woodin and McAdoo was presented in the senate investigation. Ferdinand Pecora scrutinized Morgan's 1929 Allegheny stock deal with Morgan and Whitney noting purchases totaling 1 25 million shares at $20 and sales to the listed individuals at $20 with later values of $35 to $37.
Senator investigators press Morgan banking secrets amid objections by J V Moran and George Whitney at the hearing. Whitney testifies that Morgan partners paid about 11 million dollars in 1929 income tax with little since, while names of Morgan loan recipients including John W. Davis Norman H. Davis Dawes are on record. The committee seeks to assess Morgan power over banks and industry as details of loans and deposits surface.
Ace Edmonson and two others linked to the Feb 12 robbery of Albert Nettles south of Byrds Mill faced preliminary hearings before Justice J D Willoughby. Edmonson was bound over to district court without bond after Nettles identified him. Edmonson, Curt McCoy and Elmer Lee Haggard allegedly used a shotgun flashlight and knife. Jail escape occurred days earlier. James Snider and Welston Walden also featured in separate cases.
Chicago reports say railroads plan to ask union workers for a further wage deduction possible June 1, effective Oct 1, impacting more than 20 unions. Union leader A F Whitney vows no penny cut and hints at a nationwide strike if pursued. An official notes railroads remain in deficit and must cut payrolls despite some improving business.
In Washington the Roosevelt administration faced sharp House criticism for using public funds to feed the bonus army and to pay for transportation home for ex service men. Rep Kvale questioned authority to spend for a bonus marchers convention and for a $300 daily hall cost. Rep Fish demanded exact authority for the expenditure.
A state commission ruled the office of chief conservation officer was never vacant. J B Askew, appointed May 9, sought the post and filed bond, took oath, but the commission canceled the appointment and rejected the bond. Governor Murray had not approved Askew’s selection.
May 24 Oklahoma City reports highway trucks mobilized by executive order of Governor Murray. The state highway commission will provide a reasonable number of trucks to assist the federal army in transporting recruits for the army of reforestation.
Washington May 20 CP The cotton spinning industry operated in April at 95.7 percent of capacity on a single shift, up from 93.9 percent in March and 70.7 percent a year earlier. Spindles in place totaled 30,966,794 with 25,416,680 active during the month and average 29,622,731. Active spindle hours reached 6,569,136,738, with an average of 212 hours per spindle in place.
Oklahoma City May 24. The House opened the special session dropping moves to block Gov Murray's tax emergency program while beer advocates push for action. Rep R C Garland, beer leader, backs part of Murray's demands and says beer comes next. Senator Ballard seeks authority to consider beer legislation and a July 11 election. costs and timelines loom large as debates unfold. Garland says beer will be brought up later and opposes drug store whiskey sales until the 18th amendment is repealed.
Cessna Lewis Hardberger, 33, a prominent Francis resident, drowned Tuesday afternoon while swimming near the South Canadian river under a low water bridge. His body was recovered about 5:00 PM after divers and locals searched the whirlpool area. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 PM at the Methodist church in Francis with Rev. O B Lee officiating. burial will follow in Memorial cemetery Ada. He leaves a widow and parents. prior work included railroad and bank positions.
Marvin H. Spencer a 30 year old member of Battery B First Field Artillery at Fort Sill was arrested as a suspect in the 11 year old murder of Bascum Jones in Palestine Texas. He used the name Fletcher Marshall Sheffield and was seized on guard duty by Sheriff Fritz McCarty of Comanche County. Kansas tip led to the arrest and Texas officers head to Palestine to bring him back.
A Sam Sachs junk yard truck was stolen on Tuesday night from north Broadway loaded with 24 oxygen tanks. Locks at the Cities Service complex near Fourteenth and the Santa Fe tracks were forced but nothing else was reported missing. Petit larceny reports also came from two other Ada locations. Dr J R Barry of Picher was appointed by Governor Murray to the state board of medical examiners for a four year term replacing Dr Pat Fite of Muskogee.
Paris reports that France will refuse the June 15 debt payment to the United States and other debtor nations are expected to follow. Premier Daladier believes Roosevelt will demand France first make the payment while Parliament is seen backing a refusal to pay interest or principal, ending hope for a moratorium.
Sheriff Clyde Kaiser reports the recovery of Jim Wintersmiths car stolen Sunday night found near Tyrola Monday afternoon. The vehicle is believed hidden for a criminal undertaking and was in good condition when found. Kaiser and two deputies raided an Ada liquor repository Saturday night and seized 50 gallons of beer, retaining samples for testing.
Frank J. Megow, 54, a prominent Holdenville businessman, died at a hospital from injuries suffered in a car crash near Stuart on Sunday. He was rushing to Hot Springs to visit his critically ill father. The elder Megow was en route to Holdenville in an ambulance.
The Citizens League announced it will pursue a ballot fight against the new income tax law. If the legislature passes an emergency clause, a repeal and substitute measure would be voted on. Ardmore chair John Carlock said the substitute would offer a reasonable tax proposal to keep business in the state. A ways and means committee was appointed with full power to launch the drive and headquarters opened.
Maj. Arsenio Ortiz returned to Sancti Spiritus amid secrecy, signaling a renewed campaign against rebels in Santa Clara and Camaguey provinces as the army coordinates the operations. Andrew Ortiz referred to as directing the campaign and scheduled to tackle rebel forces in the region.
After five inches of rain in Ada and Pontotoc county, more rain fell Tuesday afternoon and night with thunder and lightning and gusty winds. By 8 AM Ada recorded 1.59 inches. later clouds brought heavy showers as the ground remained soaked.
Pontotoc county launches its share of a national Red Cross campaign in 1917 with Ralph R. Cain and M. C. Wilson named to pick a campaign manager and a large local committee organizing city canvassing teams. The Ada News provides headquarters support as the drive expands. by October 1917 R. W. Simpson becomes chairman with Manville as vice chairman and committees for military relief civilian relief membership and finance. Geneva May 24 Norman H Davis American representative at the disarmament conference authorized a statement regarding his name in the J P Morgan inquiry. He said he borrowed about 50000 dollars from the Morgan company two years ago against full collateral and has been paying it off. He cited heavy private expenditures for his government work as the reason it is not yet paid in full.
New York May 24 Nicholas former president of National Petroleum Marketers is elected president of Warner-Quinlan Co succeeding W W MacFarland who remains as vice president.
Net operating income for the St. Louis San Francisco system in April was 90 585 dollars, down from 358 000 in April 1932. Gross earnings totaled 5 147 928 dollars, versus 23 605 118 in the prior year.
Governor Murray, addressing a special legislative session in Oklahoma City, deviated from his prepared message to allege mismanagement by Secretary of State R. A. Sneed and other officials in connection with the school land commission affairs.

Oklahoma City May 24 Three men Brannon Denmark and Kirkland appealed life terms for the April 5 1922 killing of Jim Wood a Johnston county Indian rancher. Wood was shot in his ranch yard by a carload of assailants who sped away later eight suspects were arrested in Oklahoma City.
