In Homewood Illinois 12 year old Carol Searing will donate a kidney to her identical twin Barbara to treat a chronic kidney condition. Nematodes Could Guard Cotton From Silverleaf Nightshade
ARS scientists Calvin C. Orr Elmer B. Hudspeth Jr and John R Abernathy found that the parasitic nematode Nothanguina phyllobia greatly reduces silverleaf nightshade in southwestern cotton fields. Artificial inoculations caused severe nematode galls and plant stunting or death while 11 other plants showed no infection. The host specific nematode could be used as a biological control or integrated into chemical or cultural practices. Research occurred at the Texas A&M University Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Lubbock Texas.
