AFL shipyard workers marched back to their posts through picket lines of other unions after striking machinists rejected Governor Culbert L. Olson’s plea to return to work in 11 San Francisco bay area shipyards. John Frey, head of the AFL metal trades council, led the effort.
Oklahoma City May 21 The house approved bills to establish home defense units with Governor empowered to enlist and equip a separate force. Representative Batson urged preparation for democracy and battlefronts while critic Miskovsky warned against a political army. The scene included AFL CIO strikes and defense yard shutdowns amid wage talks and mediation.
A four man Ada delegation travels to Washington to lobby for a municipal airport. May Crawford Frank Norris George Toler Milton Keating and the author plan talks with WPA CAA and air corps officials and seek support from Lyle Boren Senator Thomas and others for federal approval.
German paratroops and naval forces landed on Crete in a major operation aimed at securing a foothold on the island. British and Greek defenders claim to have repelled the first wave, while Berlin denies the claim about New Zealand uniforms. Churchill and family attended a Corpus Christi wedding on Tuesday.
Washington May 21. Twin objections blocked a long recess for Congress. Anti-convoy senators urged lawmakers stay on duty to monitor world affairs. Senator Nye opposed lengthy breaks amid war risk and Navy use debates. Senator Glass favored swift convoy action to ship goods to Britain.
Oklahoma City May 21 AP Legislators enter a night session to finish all appropriation bills before adjournment tomorrow. Key items include penalties and eleemosynary measures, university funding, and an $8 million school aid question under Governor Phillips. The Senate passed the uniform assessment bill and three appropriations then moved to adjournment considerations.
Lawrence McDaniel conceded Forrest C. Donnel was elected Missouri's governor after a bitter contest. A joint legislative session adopted resolutions dismissing the challenge as Donnel secured the office in eight years.
The state rested its case against Leonard Laseman a county rancher charged with the 1937 murder of Ada fruit merchant F. L. Hughes shortly before five o'clock Wednesday. Principal witness Frank Grier an inmate at McAlester penitentiary testified Laseman confessed to planning a robbery that ended in Hughes's death. Grier said they hid near Hughes's home and attacked Hughes as he drove into his driveway. Campbell the missing witness testified Laseman sought help to fix an alibi. Jurors toured the Hughes scene and were sent home for the night.
AP reports that British forces in Crete say the German assault is advancing fast but no real progress is evident. Parachute troops, sea landings, and naval actions dominate daily claims as Greece’s government flees with British troops.
Grad Week moves through Ada schools with awards at Junior High Thursday morning and high school graduation Friday for seniors with a commencement address by Dr. A Linscheid. Stonewall High School joins Wednesday night with Judge Orel Busby as speaker. two valedictorians Juanita Henry Leone Stark and salutatorian Drucilla Scott. East Central college Horace Mann high school and Roff high school also begin graduation week Sunday.
An authoritative source said British troops in Ethiopia were in contact with Italian forces about 45 miles north of Soddu in the lakes region south of Addis Ababa.
In Albuquerque area on May 21 the Rio Grande surged 150 miles, threatening rail lines and bridges. Dikes failed near Belen and Socorro with Javales flooding, while a drainage ditch checked upstream waters. The Denver and Rio Grande Western line at Chamita lost 400 feet of track and traffic moved by bus and truck.

Rain fell unevenly across the city with Ada reporting just .02 inches while Hollis and Clinton logged 4.65 and 4.19 inches respectively. Statewide showers continued with river levels rising in Canton Woodward and El Aino. Wheat growers fear rust from excess rain as a Camp Barkeley review was cancelled due to heavy rains.
The new fairgrounds administration building will start May 28, says district WPA engineer C. D. Johnson. One hundred men will be employed for 11 months at an estimated cost of $34,000. County commissioners will seek bids on materials and the building will house the health unit and other agencies.
In Los Angeles on May 21 the death of I Rude aged 66 was reported. The Dallas clothing benefactor had sent stacks of clothing to the poor for 29 years and often returned to Dallas each Christmas after emigrating from Austria at 14. Also noted is L J Crowder of Weatherford Texas visiting his twin brother, who has been confined with a fractured hip since December.
The county farm agent's office will run the Thursday noon Ada Chamber of Commerce program with cash prizes awarded to winners of the 1940 cotton contest. Prizes come from the Chamber of Commerce First National Bank Peoples Compress and Choctaw Cotton Oil company.
Dr. Ed Granger and C. H. Hailey of Ada attend the Central Oklahoma Jersey Parish Show in Wewoka. Granger, parish association president, has many entries while Hailey, county agent, attends as an observer. The meeting rotates among central Oklahoma towns and was held in Ada last year.
The Ada School District 19 board approves maintaining the current salary scale for teachers for the coming year and trims nonessential programs. They expect resignations to avoid laying off qualified staff with an eight 12.5 month term and class sizes kept reasonable despite a net district loss of about 17 thousand dollars. The annual 10 mill levy passed 162 to 1, with later funding changes projected.
