Driveway Tragedy Claims Harden City Toddler

A three year old Harden City boy died after a neighbor's car rolled over him in a driveway. Harold Jackson Jr. died shortly after reaching Valley View Hospital. Sheriff Burl Griffin said the boy slipped from the house while the neighbor, Mrs. Jim Sexton, was at the grocery. Investigators believe he may have slipped the car out of gear and jumped when it started to roll, with the vehicle running over his head. Services were held at 2 pm Monday at Fittstown Baptist Church, Rev. Lin Jones officiating, burial in Rosedale Cemetery. Survivors include his parents and two grandmothers, Mrs. Ruby Snell and Mrs. May Jackson.

Former Countian dies suddenly in California

B L Bennie Stephens, a former Ada resident born June 11, 1918, died April 27 in North Hollywood California. A WWII veteran, he moved to California in 1940 and worked for Lockheed Aircraft Co. A recent open heart surgery preceded his death. Services were held April 30 at Steens Mortuary in North Hollywood with interment at Valhalla Memorial Park. He is survived by his mother Mary M Stephens and four sisters, Kella Stephens Lois Aulder Charlie Arms and Iva Large.

Early-Day Doctor Remembers Indian Territory Life and Medicine

In Ada Oklahoma a pioneer physician Dr. W R Threlkeld recalls frontier medicine from Ara in Indian Territory to Ada after 1919. He delivered hundreds of babies, treated on horseback then by buggy and Ford, and cherishes children as his best patients.

Farm and Ranch Club Honors McLish Youth

Marvin Mitchell, 17, son of Ed and Mrs. Mitchell, Route 2 Stonewall, was named Ada Farm and Ranch Club outstanding youngster in agriculture for Pontotoc County. He receives a $25 educational grant and a plaque. Mitchell is McLish High School senior, 4 H veteran with 30 plus projects, 1963-64 Hall of Fame, county 4-H leader, state cattle judging winner, and regional representative. The award ceremony occurred at Latta during the club's Thursday meeting, led by Norris Price.

Byng High Honors Seniors At Commencement

Byng High School prepares for commencement with 51 seniors receiving diplomas from Supt. J. E. Teague. Warren Dellinger delivers salutatory after earning seven East Central medals and multiple science awards. Susie Engel gives valedictory after winning 10 medals and holding multiple student leadership roles.

Army Offers Four Year Nurse School

Sgt. William T. Epperson announced a new Army program offering tuition paid four year college nursing study. Recruits will be enlisted in the Army Reserve and receive tuition and books plus military pay. Students attend a local college during freshman and sophomore years then transfer to Walter Reed and Maryland. Graduates earn a BS in nursing and commission as second lieutenants in the Army Nurse Corps.
