U S agriculture department economists forecast 1970 cash receipts from milk sales will exceed last year’s 6.2 billion dollars due to higher prices and modest production gains. First quarter output rose despite fewer cows, with per cow yields up 2.5 percent.
The House Appropriations Committee ordered NASA to delay the Apollo 14 launch from October 1 to next year to address problems seen on Apollo 13. The $17 billion bill funds NASA at $3.2 billion for the coming fiscal year, with a $136 million net cut and reductions in research and development to defer some moon landings pending evaluation.
Oklahoma fisheries officials report angling is near an all time high across waters. Keystone area reports strong channel cat and walleye fishing at Canton Lake with good black bass and sand bass in northern tributaries. Broken Bow Lake in McCurtain County shows smallmouth and largemouth bass bonanza as striped bass brood stock and natural reproduction are anticipated in Keystone and Texoma Lakes.
Oklahoma crops lag as seedbed work halted by heavy to moderate rains. Corn planting 44 percent complete with little in the Panhandle, a touch behind last year. Wheat rated 99 percent good to excellent and advancing rapidly with about 52 percent headed, up from 42 percent a year ago.
May totals rose to eight after three accidents Wednesday. Randol Jones, Barbara Williams and others faced bonds for traffic violations. multiple drivers forfeited bonds for red lights and tailing too close amid a busy court day.
About 16 200 OU students vote on boycotting classes in a two day anti war demonstration. Gov Bartlett and OU leaders urge restraint while National Guard units stay on alert amid a peaceful but tense standoff.
Rep. Carl Albert will deliver the main address May 15 as 75 Byng High School seniors graduate at commencement exercises at 8 p.m. in the school gym. The baccalaureate is Sunday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Herman C. Ging delivering the senior sermon. Debby Ortega is valedictorian and Suzie Taylor salutatorian. diplomas by Marvin W. Stokes and Bill Keller.
Ada ranked first among Oklahoma cities in population group for traffic safety in a National Safety Council survey covering 1962 to present. The city logged 1,949 consecutive days without a traffic fatality, placing 15th nationally. Stillwater, McAlester and Ardmore also appeared in top 80 for 10,000 to 25,000 population.
Sherry Rene Wood daughter of Mr and Mrs Wallace Wood Stratford has been chosen Honor Student of the senior class at Stratford High School. The honor recognizes scholarship leadership character and activities. She will receive an academic scholarship at East Central State College for the 1970 71 term.
House Majority Leader Carl Albert urges the Marine Corps commandant to free five Marines jailed in Vietnam civilian murder cases. Oklahoma Senator Gene Stipe, representing Lance Cpl Randell D. Herrod, says Albert expects a response soon and notes the men have spent 60 days in brig and face 96 days. He contrasts Army actions at My Lai with Marine detentions.
A Civil Defense shelter management meeting is set for 7 30 p.m. Monday in the basement of City Hall. The session will review and update duties and assignments of shelter managers. All county shelter managers urged to attend, with C L Roberson in charge.
The Agriculture Department announced a $7.50 per ton increase in the 1970 peanut price support, setting a minimum average of $255 per short ton up from $247.50 in 1969. The rise ties to a parity price adjustment and must stay between 75 and 90 percent of parity depending on supply. If parity rises by August 1, the support rate may rise, but not fall below $255.
Vera Morin Griffin and Melvina Morin Russell of California and New Mexico arrived to visit their Frisco area relatives. They recalled the old routes and houses once familiar to their family, guided by chance discoveries and a name forebear. Saturday a Forman Arkansas visitor linked past and present, sparking recollections and photo taking.
