County 4-H Youths Showcase Top Broilers At Show
About 48 Pontotoc County 4-H youths completed an eight week broiler project at the County Broiler Show held at East Central State College in the Student Union Ballroom. Twenty two enter the event with five uniform dressed broilers selected for exhibition and sale after judging.

Local Men Complete Soil Testing School
Two county men in Ardmore completed a five day soil fertilizer short course to qualify them to disseminate information in a stepped up county fertilization program. County Agent Cy Hailey and Trader Mills manager Jack Jackson led the group of 50 with fertilizer dealers and agents from nine counties. John Miller of Kansas City provided soil testing instruction focusing on nitrogen effects, soil value, and the nitrogen cycle.

Vanoss Graduation Date Set for May 16
A combined graduation ceremony for Galey Union Hill Center and Vanoss schools is scheduled for May 16 in the Vanoss School auditorium. Sixth grade ceremonies will be held for Galey Union Hill and Center, with both sixth and ninth grade events for Vanoss. About 15 students will receive promotion certificates from Union Hill Galey and Center. The elementary and junior high program features roughly 30 sixth graders and 44 ninth graders on stage, with Norman Mitchell the county superintendent delivering the address.

Stonewall Plans New Elementary Grade Building in June
Stonewall High School will begin construction of a new sixty thousand dollar elementary grade building on June 1 after bonds were sold March 3 at six percent to R. J. Edwards of Oklahoma City. The plan includes six classrooms and an all purpose room in a single level cement block structure. High school students will move into vacated grade school rooms in the rebuilt area while the six room frame will be torn down and sold.

Wool Gathering Starts as Sheep Farmers Gather in County
County sheep owners kick off the spring wool cropping season with a banquet at Vaness High School. O E Gray led the way, bringing 60 sheep to the corral and weighing wool at about 150 pounds per bag. The FHA Mother-Daughter Banquet drew about 120 attendees, with Cheryl Mellon hosting, Donna Isaacs giving the welcome, and J L Barnes offering invocation.

Pontotoc County Votes Align With State Wide Trend In 1962 Balloting
Pontotoc County voters backed the state trend in most races as the 1962 campaign neared its end. Gary led county results in the governor’s race with 3,827 votes while Atkinson and Nigh trailed. Winters won lieutenant governor county and statewide. Incumbents Dow Thompson and Pat Holman faced competition in county offices, and a runoff emerged in the county commissioner race. Voters approved a two-mill levy proposal.

OU Experts Probe Ada Fossil Tree in Wintersmith Park
Ada residents uncover a 200 million year old fossilized tree likely the largest of its period. OU geologists Branson and Wilson examine a 58 1/2 ft segment found near Wintersmith Park with Ada officials supervising. The petrified trunk, dating to the Pennsylvanian era, shows preserved cellular structure and links to Cordaitales.
