J W Roberts of Oil Center is named a Man of Distinction for living in the same neighborhood over a 50 year span. Born 1874 in Washington County Ark he migrated to Center around 1890 and has stayed since. He recalls pioneer life, early farming hardships, and selling crops for low prices while building a home and wife Eva Parish who died in 1951.

Farrell Copelin, nephew by marriage to Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Stephens, received a $1,000 National Wildlife Federation fellowship for 1956 57 at Oklahoma A&M College. He is a wildlife conservation graduate student studying the Lesser Prairie Chicken population begun in 1955 under an Oklahoma Cooperative Wildlife Research unit fellowship. Mrs. Copelin, formerly June Stephens, attended school in Stonewall. The Copelins have two children, Magilyn and Dian.

About 250 landowners met in the Community Building to form a watershed association for Clear Boggy Creek. They elected an 11 member board to organize a conservancy district for upstream flood control and contributed 394 dollars in cash and pledges for preliminary expenses. The group includes farmers and businessmen from Pontotoc Coal and Atoka Counties.
