Virginia Phillips a 22 year old factory worker received a six month suspended sentence and one year probation after admitting in federal court she aided her husband Arthur Phillips in smuggling narcotics into McAlester penitentiary to raise funds for debts prior to his five year grand larceny sentence. She was arrested June 22 1935 at the penitentiary visitor's office and is employed at the state capitol.
Joe B Hill, Pontotoc county farm agent, was presented a twenty year service certificate this week by Oklahoma A and M college. Signed by Henry G Bennett and W Rude, the deckled paper honors Hill for long faithful service dating from January 1, 1916. He has served longer than any other Oklahoma farm agent and only a few have longer continuous service.
Tulsa banker and oil man Walter Ferguson left an estate estimated at 15000 with no will. Tulsa County Court petition shows Judge Jerome Fisher named Mrs. Ferguson as administratrix.
Former Oklahoma Governor William H. Murray attacked Governor E. W. Marland s income tax pension proposal as poorly drafted. He accused proponents of creating a permanent political machine and saddling a sales tax by constitutional amendment. Murray urged Congress to fix federal law and criticized using the National Guard to circulate the petition.
City police confiscated over 60 pints of taxpaid whiskey in two raids on Monday. Cecil Keeting faced a charge for possessing 55 pints at his West SeventeenthStreet home while Charley Currys wife was accused of possessing seven pints at 501 West Ninth Street. The Currys, along with Skeet and Frank Curry, recently received federal sentences for internal revenue violations.
Governor Marland commented that Bill should seek orders from Liberty League supporters after former Governor Murray issued a statement opposing Marland’s age pension amendment. Murray questioned the constitutional validity of the proposal and Marland noted Ira Finley and Finley’s opposition and a separate initiation proposal.
Ada police investigate two break-ins reported Tuesday and Monday. Herman Hamilton of Hob Nob Sandwich Shop said unknown burglars stole nickels from a marble machine, while Yandell Lain and M. C. Wilson’s home on Broadway and Twenty Fifth street lost about $5 from Lain’s trousers.
Permits to sink 15 new oil wells in northeast Oklahoma City residential districts were issued to Phillips Petroleum Co after a extension election. Five additional applications were filed. The move raises zoning and legal questions as K and L drilling team presses federal court challenge.
Sympathetic members violated house rules today to donate funds to Representative Stubbs in support of the Everett Parker family from last session's gallery baby nursing incident. Speaker Burns halted the collection after $43 was raised, and Mrs. Parker, wife of a Tennessee tenant farmer, had previously been asked to leave the gallery for nursing a baby.
The subcommittee reversed course and removed processing and all excise taxes from the report. It also cut the tax rate on dividends to non resident alien stockholders from 34 to 22 percent and outlined expected revenue from a new corporate tax and windfall levies totaling about 791 million annually over three years.
Idabel Oklahoma reports flood dangers rising as heavy rains continue. A local jury has convicted Buck Janaway 41-year-old ex Texan of murdering Walter Peewee Moore a parole violator from Tucker prison farm Arkansas. The jury sentenced him to 49 years in prison.
A severe windstorm struck western Pontotoc county Sunday night injuring no one. Near Center ten miles west of Ada a barn owned by Noma Garrett collapsed and a porch was torn from a dwelling. Bob Austell’s farm also lost a barn and several small outbuildings. No injuries reported. Large areas in several states inundated for a second time in the week.
Hundreds forced from homes as Monongahela and Ohio rivers swell anew in Pennsylvania West Virginia and Ohio. Death toll tops 200 with states listing extensive losses while flood control bills and relief aid move through Congress.
Junior livestock exhibitors joined to judge teams and individuals in the Oklahoma 4 H Club and Future Farmers of America Livestock show. About 985 head of young livestock were judged from 1 100 entered yesterday as fat lambs calves and pigs vie for prizes tomorrow with champions sold Thursday. A downtown parade of FFA and 4 H members is planned tomorrow and election of officers was held last night with Paul Louvier Mannford president Cleo Garrett Kingfisher secretary William Tarkington Choctaw reporter Wilson Snodgrass Stillwell eastern VP J D Cook Choctaw central VP Wayne Whitcomb Mooreland western VP.
Beatrice Wolf a 19 year old from Coalgate was cleared as murder charges in the July stabbing death of W. E. Burr 35 in a Shawnee hamburger slaying ended with a hung jury at trial last November. Wolf testified Burr threatened to choke her over a hamburger refusal.
Nelson W. Newman released under a 3000 dollar appearance bond after waiving arraignment and entering a not guilty plea to obtaining money under false pretenses. Ada case involves Leiza Kirby alleging a 240 acre oil and gas lease scam with claims of resale profit. Two co defendants in grand larceny case were freed on bond. Preston Castleman remained jailed.
