Oklahoma farmers anticipate cutting acreage in feed grains and cotton for 1962 while boosting sowing of soybeans peanuts and hay. A state crop survey based on farmer reports shows total crop acres at 54 million, down 2 percent from 1961, with wheat acreage down 10 percent and sorghums unchanged.
Louie Moshier announces 1961 cost share totals for Pontotoc County ASC farmers totaling 72086 dollars. Largest payments went to 435 farmers in Sandy Creek and 64 in Upper Clear Boggy. others in Leader Middle Clear Boggy and Washita watersheds received smaller shares.
Pontotoc County home demonstration club members will pin women from 16 counties in Norman for the annual spring meeting of the Oklahoma Home Demonstration Council. Miss Martha Molen announces a day-long event in Holberg Hall at the University of Oklahoma with keynote by Dr. A B Darlow on Roots and Wings. A symposium of educators and a teamwork talk by a high-achievement 4 H boy from the district are on the program.
Pontotoc County Farm and Ranch Club met at Latta High School lunchroom at 7 30 p m with senior FFA and 4H members as guests. Oklahoma State University extension specialist Fred LeCrone spoke about youth business careers in agriculture for about an hour.
A Pontotoc County family lost all clothing and household possessions when a Saturday evening fire completely destroyed their home three miles west of Ada on SH 13. The McLish family were away, neighbors reported the blaze, Ada Fire Department was not called, and locals appealed for clothing and supplies while the family stayed with Mrs. Buford Rhodes in Ada.
Members of United Cement Lime and Gypsum Workers Local 420 struck Lock Joint Pipe Co this morning. Picket lines began at 2 a.m. union rep Clyde G Brock, Wapanucka, said workers seek a reasonable wage increase and a new contract matching agreements in other plants such as New York. Manager Barvey Johnson said the company would continue negotiations.
Gene Pherigo was elected state president of the Cabana Nutria Breeders Association at the state convention held at the Mayo Hotel in Tulsa. He will assume duties in May at a meeting in Oklahoma City, where breeders from the entire south will attend. WES Mr and Mrs Jim Young attended the Sunday meeting in Tulsa, with Young serving as chairman of unit 5.
County trapper Jack McPhetridge describes receiving constant telephone calls from residents worried about wolves and other varmints. He travels counties from east to west, often at night, to check baited traps after quick tips from worried neighbors.
A county 4-H Share The Fun contest opens with a 7 p.m. show at Ada Junior High School auditorium. Rural clubs and high schools enter one group and one individual act, with sets up to six minutes. Eligible are 12th birthdays by Jan and one year of club work in the past three years. District and state entrants limited to county reps. Acts span musical dramatic and novelty categories with 1 to 9 members.
The McLish 4-H Club held its regular meeting on March 6 with group singing and the ritual. Assistant County Agent Emerson Black spoke on cattle judging and appropriate dress for the boys while Assistant Home Demonstration Agent Jane Norton led the girls section with a “Care of the Face” demonstration.
Stonewall Sportsman's Club Lake near Stonewall, established 1957, grows into a versatile recreation area with a 30-acre lake, dam, picnic sites, fishing docks, skeet range, boat landings, swimming area and diving board. Membership rises from 100 to 170 as anglers find black bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish and brim. Duck hunting and skiing are popular but warn of hazardous stump-filled waters.
Ada Livestock Auction expands with 60 new consignor pens and 30 buyer pens on a 4 acre site to boost capacity. Officials plan office and pavilion expansion to accommodate rising business as the auction grows from 30 to 250 pens and reports a record 6.405 million dollar volume with about 70 000 cattle handled last year.
About 100 attended a East Central State College dinner meeting to back State Question No. 400. Civil Defense officials and lawmakers explained the initiative, sponsored by Rep. Bob Ford, would enable a continuity of government during emergencies and would take effect only with legislative action. The vote is set for May 24 in the primary.
An active local group supports Raymond Gary in the gubernatorial race in the county. Leon Biddy chairs, with 0. R. Jackson and Keith Grimes as vice chairs. East and west county coordinators are O. R. Kinsey and O. R. Hodges, with Ada activity led by Billy Bryan at 208 East Main. The HQ offers literature and premary activities, with free coffee and doughnuts. Gary is set to address the Ada Lions Club on April 10.
