Firefighters battled multiple grass fires across the county Saturday as a 50 mph wind swept through dry conditions. The Chapman and Horse Shoe ranches suffered the heaviest losses with about 8000 acres burned, two hay barns destroyed, and runs to protect nearby homes including the Runyan residence. County Team Wins State Cattle Meet
The Pontotoc county 4-H Cattle Grading team won first place in the state commercial cattle grading contest in Oklahoma City. Team members include Don Hall Stonewall Mike Lucas Roff and Junior Ross Stonewall. Don Hall was top individual with Lucas Ross second and Ross fourth. Charles Hisaw Stonewall sixth Eldon Humphers Stonewall eighth. County champions in the same event were Hisaw Ross Hall and Humphers. Lucas was made eligible by exhibiting a fat lamb at the Oklahoma City Junior Livestock Show.

The share of expenditures for production rose to about 51 percent from 41 percent in 1947-51 due to larger farms and more commercialized agriculture with more machinery and equipment.
