Two area girls vie for miss Murray title
Ada area residents Shirley Ned of Stonewall and Karen Biggs of Vanoss compete Thursday March 25 for Miss Murray State College. The winner advances to Miss Oklahoma and then to Miss America in Atlantic City. Ned, a 1968 McLish graduate, is a Murray sophomore in music and member of Sigma Phi Alpha and the Entertainers. Biggs, a Vanessa sophomore economics major, is active in home economics and drama clubs. Contestants judged in talent, swimsuit, and evening gown. Continued on Page 5.

State moisture level is down in western Oklahoma
Oklahoma City AP reports light moisture lowered wheat prospects in the western third of the state last week while warmer temperatures boosted growth in other areas. Surface moisture is 44 percent short, 49 percent adequate, 7 percent surplus. subsoil moisture 38 percent short, 62 percent adequate. Wheat is 26 percent poor, 28 percent fair, 45 percent good.

Washington AP Nixon urged immediate congressional approval of a payroll tax increase to fund higher Social Security benefits for about 25 million recipients. He signed a 10 percent benefit boost retroactive to Jan 1, and asked to raise the wage base from 7800 to 9000 effective next Jan 1.

Joe A. Morrow received a special plaque from the Farm Bureau in Pontotoc County for 23 years of service. Local president Johnnie Boring presented the honor noting his roles as board member, president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and legislative committee member. Morrow's career includes OG and H finishing as chief engineer at Byng plant, later ranching near Fitzhugh, and community service on the Fitzhugh Baptist Church and School Board, now serving on the LDS Board. he and his wife have two sons.

The Oklahoma Farm Machinery Show at OSU Extension Center in Oklahoma City will run three days on a weekend, with more than 300 exhibit spaces. Major field implements, automatic feeders, hay loaders, silage gear, water systems, and dairy equipment fill the displays. Parking is free, refreshments by 4H clubs.
