A local labor union in Love City proclaims five KOUP in a statement attributed to CEv. The post cites group support and calls for solidarity among members amid ongoing community negotiations.
In Philadelphia on February 28 the Central Labor Union representing 140 unions and about 125 000 members voted to begin a general sympathetic strike next Saturday in solidarity with striking street car workers. The six hour secret session at Labor Lyceum Hall ended with unanimous approval to strike, despite reservations among some leaders about breaking existing contracts. Authorities hope for arbitration, while business circles press for a swift settlement as traffic disruption looms.
In Ada district court the trial of Harry Wright, charged with stealing a call from J. R. McGraw, was dismissed soon after noon after four state witnesses testified. The case against Wright was not sustained. Jones Case Continued.
The district court case progress includes J C Jones and M D Chappel motions, Nutt and Dobbs cattle theft trials, Rance Jones acquittal on horse theft, and a jailed Major Tate. In Idaho, snow slides near Mace Burke and Dorsey bury Burke, Mace, and Burke towns with twenty four dead and many injured or missing, highlighting rescue efforts and lifeline sightings.
Chicago reporting indicates nationwide anti trust actions against packing firms. New Jersey grand jury indicted directors and packing companies in the National Packing case while federal investigators near completion of a broad inquiry into meat price practices.
Twenty bodies have been recovered near Wellington Everett Wash after an avalanche that trapped the Great Northern Spokane Express on the Cascade summit since Thursday. A relief train has yet to reach within ten miles. Initial reports fixed at about thirty aboard with estimates ranging up to sixty including women and children.
Great Northern officials report train No. 25 on the Seattle Spokane run was swept from the track and buried by a snow slide at Wellington Washington at 4 30 this morning. Officials say no fatalities are likely as passengers were presumed at hotels. Additional reports say train No 27 and four electric motors pulling through the Cascade tunnel were also swept off the track and carried 100 feet by the avalanche. Traffic remains halted between Cutbank and Whitefish Mont and Leavenworth and Seattle Wash as rotary snow plows begin westward clearance.
Pontotoc County Teachers Association held a highly praised two day gathering in Francis with near full local attendance and notable state educators including Superintendent Roberts of Guthrie. The brick school building was decorated for the event with art displays and a luncheon led by toastmaster T F Pierce.
Warm wind and rain melted snow in the Cascade Mountains causing slides of snow earth and rock on railroad tracks. The Northern Pacific canceled two trains each way while other trains moved cautiously past danger points. The Great Northern main line was buried for ten miles and only one transcontinental train each way ran via Vancouver.
Jennings Oklahoma reports a prairie fire driven by a violent gale threatened the town. Citizens fought the blaze from early evening until after midnight to protect homes and outbuildings southeast of Jennings.
Thad Brown, a Black man who killed R. H. Luttrell at Eagletown, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty in Idabel court. Deputy Sheriff H. L. Stiff was ambushed on the way to Garvin and Brown was shot to pieces by a mob as they overtook the party.
Rob inson sues the railroad in circuit court seeking 1.50 or 75 per day for a Katy Limited pause en route to Houston. He claims the Katy Limited halted at Granger Texas, causing a two day tie up after a wreck.
Kansas City anticipation builds for a March event featuring Frank Gotch vs Pat Connelly and Dr. B F Roller vs Carl Beck in a double bill at Convention Hall. The show promises top draws and strong attendance.
In Hammondsport New York on February 27 Judge Hazel granted a rehearing request by Glenn H Curtiss counsel in the Wright brothers injunction suit. The judge had issued an opinion favoring the Wrights and restricting Curtiss from exhibition flights in the patent dispute.
Five militia companies that had patrolled Cairo since February 17 due to race riot fears were withdrawn today after talks between military and civil authorities. Champaign Effingham Vandalia and Shelbyville units left at noon by special train and the local company was dismissed.
Baltimore meeting reports William M. Reilly of Dallas winning a flattering 125 votes in the election for president of the International Typographical Union. The outcome reflects strong support from the Baltimore Typographical Union members.
In El Paso Texas on February 28 reports detail famine conditions among the Tarahumara and related groups as crops failed leaving them without seed for planting and facing severe hunger penalties.
