Mail Order Breeding Brings High Grade Calves to County

A Ponotoc County program uses frozen semen to let farmers choose perfect herd sires. Initiated in 1954 by Melborn Skaggs with Cy Hailey, the system lets producers follow a line breeding plan and breed cows to top bulls without keeping expensive stock locally.

Sparse Vote Grants Emergency School Tax With Bonds

In four county districts Latta Homer and Ada backed a five mill emergency school levy under a state amendment. Latta also approved a $43000 bond for a new classroom and auditorium. Voter turnout was light across districts and the measures passed.

Former Center Boy Signs to Play Pro Ball

Sammy Hitcher son of Charley and Mrs Hitcher formerly of Center has signed to play professional baseball on the west coast. He is an outfielder signed by the Oakland club and sent to the Stockton Ports of the California League for seasoning earning a straight 400 dollar a month salary. Hitcher was a standout in baseball and basketball in high school and college.

Oklahoma voters face seven constitutional questions in 1956

The 25th Oklahoma legislature adjourned leaving six amendments for voter approval plus a special election on July 3 1956 concerning a 50 million veterans loans program. SJR 1 would create the Oklahoma Veterans Loan Authority and authorize bonds backed by the states faith and credit. The second SJR 1 question would amend Section 6 of Article XL to invest funds in first mortgages on state land. SJR 3 seeks another constitutional amendment.

Local Leaders Eye Bigger Hog Output in Pontotoc County

County agricultural leaders met June 23 to map a plan to boost Pontotoc County hog production. County Agent Hailey aims to identify meat hog traits packers want and to source advised breeding stock from Minnesota No 1 Hampshire Berkshire and Yorkshire lines, expanding local herds with registered stock to improve profitability.
