Pontotoc County Fifth War Loan results through Tuesday show total sales of 859101.09 dollars, about two thirds of the 1272100 dollar quota. E bonds led with 304177.05 dollars, while corporation sales reached 336785 dollars, and other individuals sold 218139.04 dollars.
A 1944 Republican ticket headed by Gov. Thomas E. Dewey for president and Gov. John W. Bricker of Ohio as running mate was nominated in a whirlwind convention session in Chicago. The convention gave Dewey all votes save one and made Bricker's selection unanimous.
June 28 Chicago report says Gov. Thomas E. Dewey will nominate Gov. John W. Bricker of Ohio as his vice presidential running mate after widespread pledges of support from states including Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Bricker had previously shown little interest but backing grew after Earl Warren declined.
Charles P Fulton a well known Oklahoma farmer died Wednesday at 6 am. He moved to the Pecan Grove area 35 years ago after living near Ada. Surviving are his wife Mollie, one daughter Jessie Chapman of Ada, and five sons Robert Charles Basco Wallace and Emmitt, plus several grandchildren. One brother Sam Fulton of Farris Texas also survives.
Oklahoma City June 28 A statewide plan of labor hiring priorities takes effect July 1 to funnel male workers into war-need industries. Only men referred by the U S employment service or approved facilities may be employed, with exemptions for agriculture and certain other roles.
Gen Barton heads the Fourth Division praised by Gen Omar Bradley for the Cherbourg victory. Born in Ada, he attended West Point and began service locally with parents long residents here. His wartime career spans both world wars and interwar assignments, shaping his current command in France.
Soviet forces under Stalin report Minsk besieged from three directions as the Red army unleashes one of its largest air offensives of the war. Stormoviks hammer German tanks while Gen. Cherniakhovsky’s and Gen. Bagramian’s troops close in near Borisov and Orsha.
Allied forces press the Caen area offensive as British tanks drive through open terrain southwest of Caen. Montgom ery directs a deep penetration threatening German routes south and east. Air support claims gains with 25 German tanks knocked out in the latest fighting.
Lieutenant David C. Davis of the Fourth Division infantry was wounded in the right arm by German shell fire during the Normandy invasion. He wrote from an English hospital in mid June and expected to leave the hospital within three weeks. He had been overseas about six months and is married to Carolyn Gwin with a daughter, living with his mother in Wichita Falls and his wife with her mother in Ada.
Roy Summers 34 a former Adan employee wounded in a Monday Fort Worth robbery in which a fellow worker George Ballard was killed remains in critical condition with a bullet grazing the shoulder blade traversing a lung and chest. He identified the hijacker who got $10 as a Black man. W H Summers father and a sister are at Fort Worth as Mrs Erbie Lollar plans to reach the bedside.
Fargo North Dakota reported on June 28 that Lynn A. Stambaugh former American Legion national commander held a lead over incumbent Gerald P. Nye for the Republican U S Senate nomination. With 652 of 2351 precincts tallied early in the tally.
The annual Hereford Tour covers three days across Hereford area ranches including Patterson Lazy S Ardmore and Likin Flying L Davis with stops at Turner's maus Turner ranch for the 4-H FFA Field Day. A Kentucky judge notes a man can marry on $100 a month if his partner is unaware.
Finnish government commits to fighting with Germany against the Soviet advance. Helsinki reports German military aid and occupation of Finnish cities, while Ryti and Ramseay confer with Von Ribbentrop. U.S. officials warn of a possible Russo-Finnish peace collapse. De Gaulle projected to visit Roosevelt in early July.
Ada merchants announce downtown stores will close all day July 4 for Independence Day. Auto dealers and auto supply shops will also be closed. Some urged an extra Monday closing, but most stores will stay open Monday as usual.
The War department announced awards of the Distinguished Service Cross to two Oklahoma servicemen attached to the Fifth Air Force. They are Lt. Isaac W. Lovelady of Oklahoma City and T/Sgt. Delray B. Echo Hawk of Pawnee.
