Ada area faces a heavy poison ivy season as cases rise beyond normal. Doctors report more patients with severe rashes, while mild cases stay home, relying on calamine lotion. Pharmacists note a run on poison ivy preparations earlier, and explain the toxin spreads when leaves are crushed.
Kermac Angus Ranch at Poteau will host a field day with a 1 pm start at the ranch headquarters northeast of Poteau on SH 271. The program centers on a 50,000 acre ranch tour and inspection of 4,000 Angus cattle, with pasture development demonstrations and expert commentary from Dr Paul Keesee and staff. A noon speech by Bu ford Ellington will precede a barbecue lunch before tours resume, inviting all to attend and meet friends.
In Pontotoc County and Ada, veterinarians warn rabies peaks in summer as many animals including rabbits bats cats and cows may carry hydrophobia. Local dogcatcher E M Manuel recalls cases and urges vaccination and prompt reporting to a vet or official lab for testing to prevent deadly transmission.
Hereford lovers from across Oklahoma and Texas toured ranches in Pontotoc County on Monday. The Texas Oklahoma Hereford Association led by Skip Healy visited Blue Valley Ranch at Rolf with about 150 people inspecting nine herd bulls and offspring. The tour began at Lazy S Ranch Springer at 9 30 a m and included stops at E P Larsh home and Goddard Ranch north of Ardmore.
Shawnee reports a 38 year old man Byrd of Floyd fell about eight feet from a scaffold at St. Joseph's Catholic Church construction. He sustained multiple injuries including eight knocked-out teeth and contusions to scalp chin and lip. He received emergency treatment at Sugg Clinic and was released.
Lea's Park near Byrd's Mill Creek became a landmark in 1828 when Lewis Lea built a stream fed 50 by 100 foot pool one mile west of Fittstown. Ed Welch aided construction, drawing water from Byrd's Mill Creek. The pool remained unfenced to allow parental supervision and drew visitors from Ada and Franks, with Franks hosting a bustling early town scene.
Tommy Sullivan, superintendent of Wapanucka School since 1958 after long service as principal and earlier roles, resigns effective July 1 to become assistant director of school plant services for the Oklahoma Department of Education. He will relocate to the Oklahoma City area after mid summer.
