County residents faced flooded roads washed bridges and downed lines after a storm Friday night with 4 to 5 inches of rain and gusts to 50 mph. County commissioners tally wrecked bridges as crews work to restore routes. Weather gauges conflicted over total rainfall and officials seek emergency state aid.
A new 23 percent hp siren mounted on the bank building in Stonewall proved effective during Friday night's storm. Fire Chief Jack Eden says it can be heard up to three miles and will be used by the Ground Observers Corps. Bernard Glover is head observer.
The U S Department of Agriculture outlines plans to exchange CCC owned grain inventory for Soil Bank certificates earned by farmers for reducing 1957 acreages in wheat corn and rice. Certificates may be redeemed for cash or exchanged for other grains within set limits. Exchange values follow current support prices by grade class and location, with specific grain substitutions allowed.
Lula High School shut down at term end after the state board refused transfers that would not meet the emergency criteria, dropping its average daily attendance below 40 and forcing student reassignment to nearby districts. County officials had appealed the decision but the vote stood. Superintendent D. Whelchel plans to lead the elementary school as Lula consolidates with area districts.
UNION HILL A group of men and boys visiting Mr and Mrs Bud Jones hauled hay for Karl Tilley on Friday night. They finished before the rain came and shared homemade ice cream before it began to rain again. Mrs Jones notes visitors from Oregon felt at home despite the wet weather.
The second and final polio mass immunization clinic in Ada will be held Saturday at the VFW building, 110 East Tenth, from 3 to 7 p.m. Volunteers from physicians and Red Cross will administer vaccines at $1 each. Adults who had the first shot may receive the second, with future clinics planned in Stonewall, Roswell, Allen, and Stratford.
Mrs. Jack West, while hanging laundry, disturbed a rubber hose and a snake. Her husband Mr. West shot the constricting snake that had coiled around the old hen, saving the rest of the flock but ending the hen’s life. The incident prompted a search for the weapon and flashlight aid from Mary Jo.
Frisco report describes Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Simon Patton observing a baby crane in the yard east of the fence. The crane, too small to fly, seemed to be foraging or straying while Mrs. Thompson recently fed a backyard squirrel that has become tame from pecan offerings.
