In Anadarko Oklahoma on June 13 Bennie Simmons an 18 year old Black man accused of murdering Susie Church 16 was lynched between 3 and 4 am by a mob of about 1000 people. Residents of Cogar supported the mob as authorities rushed Simmons to the county jail for safety.
Washington June 17 Debate in the senate over the Indian appropriation bill grew heated as lawmakers clashed over bill details and alleged fraud. Senator Lane accused aides of poor information while Senator Gallinger objected to land suit provisions in Eastern Oklahoma. Further disputes over tribal funds contracts and lobbyist influence followed before adjournment.
Pauls Valley Oklahoma June 16 W B Mitchell a state legislator and special investigating committee member was arrested on a Garvin county warrant charging theft and altering a public record in a case involving substituting a false publication for sale of real estate to a minor and to collect an insurance policy I C Andrews and Gabe Kemp were also arrested on the same charge in connection with the alleged fraud.
J. D. Cotner aged 28 of Ada wed Lula Miller aged 21 of Ada. E. C. Clapp aged 21 of Franks married Bula Green Franks aged 19.
Judge Hughes ruling in the Missouri and Arkansas 2 cent passenger rate case paves the way for Oklahoma to seek dissolution of a temporary injunction blocking the rate. State officials call it a clear Oklahoma victory though exact steps were not disclosed.
The Fourth Legislature meets Monday to receive reports from the House General Investigating Committee and finish bills on the calendars. Key items include the general appropriation bill, a proposed 1 percent gross production tax on coal and gas, and revisions to revenue laws. Conferees oppose diverting mineral tax revenue to general warrants, citing school fund protections. Masters Paxton and James S. Hutchison arrive to spend the summer with relatives in Oakman.
Early Sunday night a fight erupted in the negro section in front of Cal Hodge’s place. Clarence Evans and Henry Galbert were slashed and stabbed with Galbert badly wounded in the chest and head. Evans received a cut to the right hand and a wound below the chest. Evans bond set at $750 after a preliminary hearing. Galbert reportedly threatened Evans’ wife and chased him to the scene.
Chicago reports eight deaths and nearly fifty prostrations as a mid summer heat wave grips the region. Hog shipments suffer mass mortality from overcrowded cars while packers refuse carcasses. Six drownings and a record 96 degree official temperature plus thermometers above 109 in the city mark a brutal June 16.
Ardmore Ok June 18 The Carter county board of commissioners voted to grant 500 to the Commercial Club secretary to continue farm demonstration work in the county. A petition will be prepared and presented for board approval. The move ensures farm demonstration supervised by a farm expert will continue for another year.
Deputies and county officials tracked Nelson Wade to Ada after he insulted white women at three homes east of Conway. Wade allegedly drew a gun at Mrs Garnewell, menaced Mrs Moss and another woman, and fled when confronted by Lee Reynolds. He was captured in Ada and jailed.
Oklahoma City plans for two new structures a boys dormitory costing about 20000 and a chapel for the Eastern Star costing about 8000. Bids will be opened June 24 at a board of control meeting held at the Masonic temple.
Dewey Oklahoma June 17 announces the Sixth Annual Roundup dates from July 3 to Saturday night. Joe A Bartles raises purses to 2200 in gold money for ropers and riders. The arena will be built six hundred by two thousand feet with twelve row seating and a canopy. Five cars of steers arrive from the Mexican border and two cars of unridden horses are secured. Events run all day with a carnival in the streets at night.
The annual Cotton School for farmers conducted by the A. and M. College will run July 7 to August 2 with no attendance costs beyond board and lodging. Room and board in Stillwater is about 4.00 dollars per week. The program provides training to farmers.
Dr. T W Hartman reports a family of five traveling from Byars to visit Mack Fleming was thrown into a wire fence by a runaway team near Maxwell. The husband, a brother of Mack Fleming, and his wife plus three children were injured, with the youngest baby under one year the worst hurt.
The Supreme Court ruled two cent passenger laws and maximum freight rates in Arkansas Missouri and West Virginia valid. Missouri and Arkansas decisions found rates not an unlawful taking. Oregon rates also approved and interstate commerce claims rejected. The Kentucky case released no decision.
Washington reports reveal the Sugar lobby spent hundreds of thousands to oppose tariff cuts. Beets sugar groups used Senator Lodge’s frank to mail out over a million pieces of literature, with Palmer’s charts cited as evidence of strong lobbying and cost savings from post.
