A federal mandate forces Osage murder cases toward federal court, while Judge Jesse Worren in Pawhuska clings to state custody until trial. Hale and Ramsey face charges tied to the Roan murder and a $25,000 life policy, with Burkhart's guilty plea altering the conspiracy dynamics.
PaWhuska Oklahoma June 12 Judge Jesse J Worren Osage county district court said he intends to hold W K Hale and John Ramsey in the county jail until September 20 for trial on a state murder charge involving Fairfax rancher W E Smith. He will not surrender them to federal authorities without a strong reason.
Washington June 16 Senate leaders warn there will be no adjournment until the river and harbor bill passes. Republicans indicate talks to compromise three hotly debated sections including diversion of water by Chicago from Lake Michigan the river project and the Cape Cod purchase. If no compromise emerges, groups of senators plan to talk the bill to death in the senate.
R P Bowles once Durant mayor shot himself to death late Friday. An electrician, Pess Wilson, heard the shot and found Bowles. Bowles had been in ill health for years and was impeached and removed from office in 1922 on charges of misappropriation of funds.
Secretary Mellon calls the equalization fee plan in the McNary bill economically unsound and unworkable, saying it offers no lasting benefit to farmers and would raise consumer prices. Representative Dicker son of Iowa fires back that administration interests oppose any meaningful protection for farmers. Additional notes quote Representative Haugen noting the bill’s momentum falters in Congress.
Sixteen Thoroughbred horses valued at 200000 and the 40000 Crosbie Stables near Tulsa burned during a violent storm at 3 45 this morning. Trainer Gus Carpenter escaped as hay loft collapsed and flames engulfed the barn. The loss ranks among the sport’s greatest turf disasters with horses screaming as workers fought the blaze.
Oklahoma City reports the Oklahoma supreme court set Thursday for argument on M. E. Trapp’s eligibility to appear on the Democratic gubernatorial ballot. District Judge William H. Zwick previously indicated Trapp could run, with a likely court opinion expected after the hearing.
Oklahoma City June 15 1055 candidates filed last minute for 200 state jobs with expectations of surpassing 1200 total. Governor slates on multiple tickets numbered twenty three, lieutenant governor twenty six, corporation commission twenty three, and secretary of state seventeen. J C Walton deposed governor and US senate nominee filed for the senate while S P Freeling also late filed for the same race.
Dr W A Rupe of St Louis lectured on modern pediatrics as part of a post graduate course co sponsored by the University School of Medicine and the Extension Department. Fourteen cases were examined in today’s clinic and more courses are planned across Oklahoma to share latest child care advances.
East Central State Teachers College lists Jack Kelley as a four year star and versatile athlete. The Ada product starred in baseball football and basketball earning all conference mentions and serving as team captain in basketball. He left for Terrell Texas to join a professional baseball opportunity after the season.
The state department of labor has issued a call for 5,000 harvest workers. Mrs. Snead, head of the local Red Cross chapter, says many men have already left, and efforts continue to meet the quota. Those available should contact Mrs. Snead immediately.
Ada reports the Oklahoma City selection as the next meeting place for the Confederate Veterans reunion with J A Yeager of Tulsa re elected division commander. Officers named by United Daughters of the Confederacy and staff appointments announced. parade planned and two day reunion proposed.
Chicago reports heavy storms causing hundreds of flooded homes and washouts across the region. One man died by lightning and another electrocuted on a broken wire. Rockford suffers its worst flood in 36 years with bridges washing away and rescues ongoing. Rainfall of 4.41 inches in 90 minutes drenched the area.
Des Moines reports five deaths linked to the weekend Iowa storm. Two victims died from lightning, two in auto accidents on slick roads, and one drowned in a swollen stream. Flooding feared as rivers remain high and may overflow further downstream.
Ada Lodge No. 119 will confer the Master Mason degree in full form at the Convention Hall on June 24 with expected attendance from many lodges. A May 20 presentation at Durant drew about 300 masons from southern Oklahoma and northern Texas. 1500 masons are invited in the region.
Leonard Elliot faces district court charges after a preliminary hearing before Justice of the Peace Joseph Anderson. The alleged event occurred February 9 when Elliot allegedly gave a check to McCarty Brothers garage on Sulphur Bank.
