Deacon Winters a Byng High School graduate from Ross Sterling High School Baytown Texas earns an appointment to the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs He is the son of Betty Contrearas and Charles F Winters and grandson of several Scroggins and Winters relatives He was named best all around boy and starred in football and baseball and made the South Texas All Star Baseball Team He plans to play both football and baseball at the Academy reporting in late June.

The Chickasaw Nation will sponsor a free health clinic at the Bethel Community Building in Byng. A joint effort with Ponotoc County health officials, the event runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. offering hearing tests blood pressure checks diabetes tests and health information. Nurse Clarice Gregory and health representative Richenda Brown head the clinic with Ethel Leffery assisting from the Public Health Department.
