Palm Oil Competes With Soybeans In Global Markets

The Agriculture Department says foreign palm oil remains a major rival to American soybeans and that prices are unlikely to move much through 1979. A high protein soybean demand could offset some oil price drops, keeping soybean prices near 4.30 to 4.85 per bushel over the period.

Home prices rise at 22 percent annual rate

The Federal Home Loan Bank Board reports new home prices surged to a 22 percent annual pace, with February median at 43000 and up from 38000 a year earlier. The analysis warns rising prices could limit first time buyers and threaten housing industry revival despite higher construction.

Idabel Area Hit Hard By Storms

Severe thunderstorms in McCurtain County Oklahoma with winds near 100 mph demolished five mobile homes and blew roofs off two houses. No injuries were reported as power lines and debris blocked roads until crews cleared them. Broken Bow reported three trailer homes destroyed by the same storm system.

Beef prices rise while pork stays steady say USDA figures

Preliminary USDA data show beef prices climbing at supermarkets to about 1.39 per pound in April from 1.35 in March, with may rise toward 1.43 by month end. Pork prices eased to under 1.37 but edged up late April, as beef price trends influence meat costs and larger broiler and pork supplies loom midyear.

Expansion in livestock production tied to record grain harvests

Government experts say a second consecutive large grain harvest could spur expansion in meat milk and poultry output and help ease consumer food prices. USDA projects 1976 wheat around two billion bushels with a strong spring crop and a 6.0 to 6.7 billion bushel corn yield possible, potentially lowering farm grain prices by fall and boosting livestock feeding.

March U S meat and dairy output hits records

Agriculture data show March yields for meat at a record 3.51 billion pounds with beef at 2.32 billion pounds. Pork rose 12 percent year over year to about 1.1 billion pounds while butter and cheese also posted gains though overall dairy lagged last year.
