USDA data show farm price index at a high point for 1975 as of May 15 with a 5 percent rise from mid April and a 14 percent jump in meat animal prices led by beef at 36.50 per 100 pounds hogs at 45.10 and lambs at 45.40 per hundredweight while grain prices declined with wheat 3.47 a bushel corn 2.66 and soybeans 5.00.
Four national scientific teams to help the Interior Department and Fish and Wildlife Service study stream alteration powerplant siting western energy and land use and coastal development. Teams will guide research information dissemination and field support across 19 states with plans for handbooks and rapid contracting.
A June July National Wildlife issue notes a 100 fold rise in American birders over a decade. Millions watch for species such as red-bellied woodpeckers and gray-spotted flycatchers with guided tours and telephones for bird finds. Notable birders include Joseph W. Taylor, Kenn Kaufman, and G Stuart Keith.
The Bishop of Oxford, Right Rev Kenneth Woollcombe, told a churchmen conference that the Church of England has made marriage too easy and divorce too difficult. He cited inadequate spiritual preparation for couples and said the church has been obsessed with divorce for years.
AP Science Writer William Stockton reports that hamster tests support a theory that natural radioactivity in tobacco may contribute to lung cancer in smokers. Polonium from cigarette smoke showed potential to induce lung cancer in animals, with dose dependent cancer risk observed.
Oklahoma Water Incorporated led by Bob Kerr adopted a resolution at its May 16 annual meeting calling for a constitutional amendment to prohibit water transfers from a watershed while water remains needed for beneficial uses. Kerr notes current protections exist but fear persists about supplying surplus waters elsewhere. Two Eastern Oklahoma senators have expressed support and plan for related legislation.
The U S Fish and Wildlife Service seeks public input on proposed general guidelines for migratory bird seasons hours and bag limits. Public comments due by June 7 1975 addressed to Director FWS Washington DC. Final rules for 1975 76 will reflect comments and testimony received.
J Stanley Altmann of the National Assessment of Educational Progress says science instruction has slipped as NAEP results show a six month loss in learning across ages 9 to 17. Tests covered science math English and government with fewer correct science responses in every age group.
