Pontotoc Homecoming Draws 1500 to School and Cemetery

Mrs. Dick Truitt and son Rich ard and Mrs. Cole Underhill led a Pontotoc homecoming with about 1500 attendees from near and far. Ada lumber companies donated benches, and dinner at the school cafeteria raised 235 dollars for ground care for a year. Decoration Day in 55 will repeat the event.

Men Move Mountains At Lawrence

The town of Lawrence near Ada lives from a single industry, the Ideal Cement quarry. About 125 residents in 35 houses work amid a Bavarian Alps like setting with an old school and bridge. The quarry is a modern four by one thousand foot site with four miles of track and a spur to Frisco Railroad, feeding the Ada plant. Exploration tests determine rock depth before quarrying begins.

Vanoss Seniors Recall Galveston Trip Unqualified Success

Vanoss High School seniors raised nearly $800 to fund a six day Galveston Texas trip chaperoned by Supt. and Mrs. H L Kinsey. The group enjoyed sunbathing swimming rides and sightseeing while noting the trip was too short.

County School Count Grows in Pontotoc County 1954

The 1954 enumeration shows growth in school age and pre-school populations. White school age children total 6,316 with 3,301 boys and 3,015 girls, plus 95 boys and 105 girls in other categories. Pre-school white children total 2,898 and Negro pre-schoolers 113, for a county grand total of 3,011 pre-schoolers. Families rise from 4,412 to 4,540. Ada and nearby towns show gains.

Driver Pleads Guilty to Nighttime Speeding Charge

John Vernon Shults was arrested May 29 by Highway Patrol trooper H D Van Ars dell and pleaded guilty in Justice of the Peace court to a nighttime speeding charge after being caught about 14 miles west on State Highway 19.

The County Treasurer Virgil Hunt said a routine audit by a representative of the State Examiner and Inspector’s office has begun. Man Sought Here Over Bogus Check

Ada man Argyle McElroy faces a bogus check charge after giving a $9.02 paint payment on December 28, 1953 to Raymance Paint Contracting Co. The Montgomery Ward complaint says the check bounced for insufficient funds and he had not yet been captured by noon Wednesday.
