Biomass agriculture eyed as potential energy source

Farmers trim cattle herds as beef demand falters

A mid year USDA survey shows cattle inventories slipping with July 1 totals at 130.6 million head, down 2 percent from a year earlier. Cows and calves on hand fall 3 percent to 52.3 million, while the 1977 calf crop is projected at 46.1 million, 3 percent below 1976. Dairy stockpiles rise as USDA boosts butter cheese and nonfat dry milk purchases to support milk prices.
