The report notes a mixed hay season in Pontotoc County with overall ample supply yet uneven results. Latta dairyman Theo Glover reports about 900 bales of oats hay from 40 acres of Sudan grass, hindered by a poor start and subsequent rain.
McLish school undergoes a summer remodel costing 2500 dollars with new equipment and a 45 passenger bus. Two new teachers arrive: L. B. Cash to coach boys and teach math and Billy Scott to teach commerce and coach girls basketball.
Egypt farmer Paul Henderson plowed under his calf pasture to kill weeds. The field, already infested with rats, attracted rat families Sunday night and they moved into the garden, causing damage and concern.
Frisco resident Sid Marshall, a World War I veteran, returned to McAlester for a business trip on July 20, marking 40 years since his discharge from service. He traveled with his nephew Jerry Sidac, invited by Dea Lance during a Sunday visit to the Marshall home.
Pontotoc County appoints Oren Phillips to succeed Sheriff Bill Broadrick effective August 1. Phillips, previously deputy to Ray Goodwin, will earn about $5,400 yearly as sheriff. Broadrick resigns to become an ABC agent enforcing the state's new liquor code and related provisions.
Oscar Rankin is appointed to the Farmers Home Administration Committee for Pontotoc County for a three year term starting July 1 1959. He lives 17 miles northwest of Ada and succeeds Earlin Haskins whose term expired. Rankin, a beef cattle operator with his sons Sheldon and Samuel, has chaired ASC and aided Shawnee Production Credit Association. He has resided in the Galey community since 1908.
Mrs. Simon Patton recounts a night in Frisco where Spike the Barnes dog treed a mother possum and five young in a nest. Neighbor dog Shep joined in, the possums were killed, and Mr. Barnes returned to bed after securing the scene. A second incident found a possum dining at a fryer in the brooder house before the dogs drove it off.
A Friday noon wreck on Highway 19 near Davis Salvage four miles west of Ada involved Albert Cox and his brother Charles Cox. Charles was treated for a gash on the ear after the crash with a pickup driven by Troy Hardwick. Trooper Skipe Mitchell investigated the accident.
Lula Lula School will open for its summer session on Monday July 27. A new lunchroom inside the school building will be ready for use this session.
Teachers listed include C. D. Whelchel as principal for upper grades and Mrs. Arthur Dennis for lower grades. Janitor is John Harden and the lunch room cook is Mrs. Harden.
Rev Lester Ames will evangelize revival services at Assembly of God Church in Fittstown starting Sunday July 26 at 7 45 each evening. Pastor Rev Moody Hicks announced the event with special music featured. Ames is a former pastor of the Tishomingo Assembly of God Church.
Lula Biddie Bryan Duncan, 61, of Allen died at home Monday. Funeral services were held Thursday at Happyland Baptist Church with Rev. Clyde Nickell officiating. Burial followed in Conway Cemetery. Survivors include husband Rollen Duncan, grandson Skippy Leader, and three daughters including Mrs Virgie Alberson of Tupelo and Mrs Ruby.
The Oklahoma Hampshire Breeders Association hosted a field day in Ada with over 250 pig enthusiasts at the Ada Pony Sale facilities. Activities included meat type hog demonstrations, judging contests for 4-H and FFA and adults, and talks on swine management. A new backfat probing method drew interest for live weight estimation and breeding selection.
The Summers Chapel Free Will Baptist Church reported 73 in attendance on Sunday. Visitors included Mrs. Ward Wood and others from Ada, Alma, Shafter, Perry, Panhandle, and Albuquerque. Camp meetings begin July 27 with Youth Camp July 29 led by evangelist Bob Duncan. Continued on Page Two.
