Ned Biffle on his ranch south of Allen clears timber to let sun and air reach his grasses. He notes dozing costs near 40 dollars per acre and drone-like aerial spraying failed in a 640 acre tract left thick with brush. He now tries a clearing blade approach as a cheaper, more effective alternative.
The Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association holds a two day Ada convention starting with a noon barbecue June 25 at Srl Rhynes ranch south of Stonewall. Delegates tour local ranches and hear reports on beef imports policy and the screwworm issue with leaders including W R Brannan and Walter Woolley Jr. leading discussions. The event, hosted by Pontotoc County, includes sessions at the Aldridge Hotel and coordination with the Oklahoma CowBelles led by Mrs. Wray Finney.
Traffic on US 77 at Purcell moved normally Monday using a temporary detour around the Walnut Creek bridge which collapsed under a gravel truck early Saturday. Division Engineer Lawrence S. Hill said a low water crossing allows through traffic and crews will improve it as the bridge is rebuilt.
An eight man Soil Conservation Service team probes possible causes after a five inch rain triggers a leak and partial collapse of the W B Shi Ranch dam south west of Stratford. Inspectors take core samples from dam and foundation to determine if dry weather cracking or creek bed factors caused the failure.
Ada Livestock Auction president Sherwood O Neal cites too many cattle as the core issue. He notes a $30-$35 per head drop from a year ago and predicts early 1930s style struggles as feedlots overextend. Cody of Coal County agrees, predicting July and August pressure as she cattle glut persists. He sees no relief soon and expects higher retail beef prices to mask declines in farm margins.
