In Oklawaha, Florida, federal agents battled the Barker gang for nearly six hours, killing Fred Barker and his mother Ma Barker during a siege at a rented lakeside home. Agents fired about 1500 rounds as tear gas was used. no agents were harmed.
Drilling continues at John Fitts field while Stanolind Pipeline tests an 8 inch line from Pauls Valley to Fitts to move oil to a trunk line. Oklahoma Pipeline plans an 8 inch line from Francis with a 6 inch gathering system to meet rising well output. Potentials are being taken under state proration rules lifting Fitts field to Class C.
Pope Pius named Henry Cardinal Lepicier protector of the Sisters of St Joseph whose mother house is in St Louis Missouri.
Earl Brumley was bound over to district court without bond after a preliminary hearing in Pontotoc County. He is charged with the January 2 fatal shooting of Bert Lewis, his partner in a Fittstown restaurant. Bertie Lewis and two other witnesses faced testimony as crowds gathered at the hearing. Brumley’s case moves to the next district court term.
Oklahoma City January distribution of 310,233.85 in December sales taxes for November boosts each county. Pontotoc County gets 4,078.25 while the common school equalization fund receives 65,998.94 of 389,596.04. Total sales tax saved since July 1933 to December 31, 193? stands at 6,111,714.56.
Preliminary hearing for Ed Shirley Thedes Fowler and Ambrose Bittle on disturbance of religious worship was set for Saturday January 19 at 9 o clock in the morning. They were arraigned before Justice Sherwood W Hill. Bond was set at $200 each. They are accused of creating a disturbance during services at Galey school house in the northwest part of the county last Sunday night.
Tal Crawford was sworn in as district judge succeeding J F McKeel who filled the term after Orel Busby left for the state supreme court. John Boyce McKeel became county judge, swearing in without ceremony and promptly paroling two youths to parents. McKeel said no court stenographer or bailiff changes would occur immediately.
Leonard Hudgins pleaded not guilty to larceny of an automobile after arraignment before Justice of the Peace A. W. Oliver. Bond set at 5000 dollars. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday January 18. The 1928 Buick coupe owned by Millard Lawson was taken from West Main Street December 28 and later wrecked southeast of Ada. Hudgins, now hospitalized, has a lengthy record including three two year penitentiary terms for grand larceny and another term at Granite Oklahoma.
Ernest Whitworth Marland was sworn in as Oklahoma's tenth governor by Chief Justice Fletcher Riley at noon. before 15,000 spectators on the capitol steps. The 60-year-old oil magnate pledged to provide security for every resident and to cooperate with the federal recovery program amid a chilly, wind swept inaugural day. A five mile parade followed the speech as crowds gathered to hear the new administration.
The Irving district votes $42,000 in bonds to fund a new 13 classroom school building plus a $16,400 PWA grant. First National Bank of Ada purchased the bonds and they await approval from the U S attorney general before bids can be let. After approval a three day protest period will precede contract award and start of construction.
Pontotoc county school masters club met Tuesday evening at Stonewall with President Duke in charge. W D Little presented an address on Frank L Stanton outlining his career and reading his poems. J W Huff explained federal aid features for schools. Frisco and Owl Creek provided readings and music. About 35 teachers and guests attended.
W. L. Byrd camp United Confederate Veterans met Sunday January 13 and elected officers for the year. W. B. Cantwell was named captain with Ben A. McCown lieutenant, W. C. Jones adjutant, J. W. Flowers chaplain, F. C. Jones flag bearer, and Cantwell to organize the Sons and Daughters. The group meets first Sunday each month at 2 p.m. at the courthouse.
Mrs Isadora Gott a 64 year old widow from Britton Oklahoma died of blood poisoning after an August ant attack in her bedroom. Alone at a niece’s home in Oklahoma City she lay immobile for seven years and neighbors were alerted after ants crawled over her inert body. Doctors said the ant attack contributed to her death.
The notice warns that this year income tax returns will be public, urging vigilance to prevent neighbors from obtaining an eyeful of others tax details.
