Governor Raymond Gary proclaims February 12 to 18 as Save Our Soils Week urging all Oklahomans to learn how each person can conserve and improve soil. County agent C. H. Hailey stresses soil health affects everyone and that land ownership isn’t limited to rural areas.
Farmers learn planting legumes improves forage value and livestock production. Soil tests guide lime and fertilizer needs. trials show 100 pounds of beef per $3 in fertilizer and lime. Choose legumes by soil type with alfalfas and clover recommended for nonacid, nutrient-rich soils.

Levi Ackley of Tulsa was fined one thousand dollars for illegally injecting salt water into oil wells in the Fitts pool Pontotoc County and for permitting surface pollution. The penalty, the first under a 1955 pollution law, followed findings by the Corporation Commission and Game and Fish staff. The pollution damaged Boggy Creek and surrounding ground near the wells.
Harral Allen, Pontotoc County farmer and president of the Oklahoma Association of Soil Conservation Districts, testified before a House agriculture subcommittee in Washington on revisions to Public Law 56. He traveled after the National Association of Soil Conservation Districts met in Boston, where delegates urged priority funding for the Washita Valley flood prevention project and full funding to complete current plans. Allen was in Wilburton Thursday for a watershed meeting sponsored by Friends of the Land. no comment was secured.
Maxwell district with 13 pupils and one teacher and Worstell with 20 students and two teachers see annexation petitions as patrons seek to join Maxwell. Worstell voters set a Feb 24 vote window from 2 to 6 pm on annexation to Maxwell, while Maxwell backers push to join Vanessa. If Worstell joins Maxwell the districts lose separate identity. if not, both continue and may pursue other annexations.
Harral Allen explains how 86 soil conservation districts operate under state law since 1937. Districts are local government sub divisions run by five elected landowners or operators, each pursuing district wide plans to solve local soil and water problems with landowner help.
The Pontotoc County Cooperative Film Library enables small rural schools to show movies without heavy costs. County Superintendent Norman C. Mitchell maintains 127 distinct film titles and projectors for use by eligible schools, with four duplications among the 131 reels.
The Latta vocational agriculture department will sponsor a dairy meeting Monday at 7 45 p m in the agriculture classroom announced by instructor Jay Pruitt. Floyd Lecrone of Purina Co is slated as a speaker and county dairy men are urged to attend.
Countywide school board elections are scheduled for March 27 with filing from March 7 to March 17 at 5 p.m. Norman Mitchell, county superintendent, says one member per district will win a three year term. Election packs are ready for clerks and districts must publish preliminary needs estimates by March 10.
Don Henderson of the Latta FFA chapter won first place in a Friday speech contest sponsored by the Pontotoc County Soil Conservation District. David Golden of Vaness took second and Foy Hendrix of Rofs third. Henderson earned 15 dollars and a chance to compete in a southeast Oklahoma district contest. second and third prizes were 10 and 5 dollars. Judges cited presentation and knowledge of soil conservation.
