4 H Dress Revue Set At East Central State College Ballroom

The 4 H club dress revue is scheduled for March 23 at East Central State College Ballroom from 9 30 am to 12 pm. All 4H girls should enter. Classes range from first year headscarf and handkerchief to ninth year suit coat and dress or party dress with several intermediate outfits.

Sheriff Is Suspended From Post

Johnston County grand jury accuses Sheriff Kenneth Reubin of misconduct in office and seeks his ouster. District Judge Joe B. Thompson suspends him temporarily and orders appearance next Friday to answer charges. The report also cites use of jail inmates for private work and mismanagement of confiscated liquor and prisoners.

Housewarming Surprise For Mrs J E Teague

A group of determined women organized a surprise housewarming for Mrs. J E Teague at her new brick home on Doghouse Road outside Ada. Mr. Teague helped by delaying the dinner while the guests entered, then played along with lighthearted misdirection as the party unfolded amid gifts and applause.

Three Ada High Seniors Named National Merit Finalists

Three Ada High School seniors Terry Haynes Carla Herman and James Cannon have been named finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Finalists compete for merit scholarships and may qualify for other grants. Winners will be announced later in spring after written analyses of intended study fields education goals and career plans. About 0.5 percent of U S high school seniors reach finalist rank.

Latta 4-H Wins a Blue Ribbon at Share the Fun

Latta 4-H Club won a blue ribbon at the Central District 4-H Share the Fun program in Stilwater on February 6. The Latta act Prairie Romance, directed by Mrs. Marie Morgan, featured Deborah Ellison narrating and performers Ann Weaver Janet Lane Kathy Ball Barbara Kirby and Sandra Allen acting. Shirley Howell from Roff earned a red for a piano solo.

Byng Teachers Try Dieting

Byng correspondents report several teachers attempting a Mayo diet, a two week high protein plan promising up to 20 pounds weight loss. At least six Byng teachers are on the program, with one group just beginning the diet.

Rigsby Named Assistant Director in State Conservation

Clive R. Rigsby, former Pontotoc County state representative, is named assistant director of the Corporation Commission conservation department. He will replace D. L. Jones who becomes director of oil and gas pollution control, succeeding the late W. J. Marshall. Rigsby will work under conservation director Dan Dunnett, in a department of about 37 employees, and will maintain his Ada farm while establishing a temporary residence at the Huckins Hotel.

Vandals Threaten Wintersmith Park In Ada

The Ada park faces ongoing vandalism with damaged lights, broken windows, torn fixtures and sprayed paint at Wintersmith Park. Officials consider installing about 2000 feet of fencing to seal the northern sector and protect the lodge, arboretum and recreation equipment.

Giant Stride Could End Ten Pontotoc Schools

Norman C. Mitchell, Pontotoc County superintendent, analyzes Gov. Henry Bellman’s Giant Stride plan. It would abolish rural districts and the county superintendent role, merging small schools into larger districts and impacting ten dependent schools with 600 students and 30 teachers. Mitchell supports smaller two teacher schools for individual attention and notes enrollment rising. he doubts a large salary increase is needed and sees administration challenges if districts consolidate.
