Olt Moore, 41, World War veteran, found guilty of first degree manslaughter in the 18 year old Gladys Huckelby case. Jury recommends 15 years in the state penitentiary. Trial stretched over two days and a night, with defense claiming insanity at times. Davis case also featured, pending retrial.
In Washington on February 3 the Roosevelt flood control proposal, a five billion eleven million public works program, seeks to curb river floods and strengthen economy in future depressions. The plan, tied to a six year public works program, targets the Ohio and Mississippi basins with a national flood control system and emergency measures. Senator Robinson pledged support to fund a vast, integrated system as officials note improved conditions in the Carroll area and lower Mississippi. An emergency $136,000 was allotted for rescue work and levee upkeep.
Montgomery Feb 3 The legislature overrode Governor Bibb Givens veto enacting a state liquor control plan for counties that voted wet in a statewide referendum. Dry counties stay with near beer limits while residents may buy liquor in wet counties. Kansans remain the only dry state. notes mention regional bans and a Pasquen macnayckepla description.
Senators Elmer Thomas and Jost Lee report that Joseph B. Keenan suggested A P Murrah for Oklahoma's new roving judgeship. Keenan cited Murrah, Judge Pletcher Riley, or Royce Savage as acceptable, stating Lee's strong support for Murrah could secure confirmation. A final decision was expected soon from the justice department.
Ada city council in its weekly meeting admitted Bonnaview Heights southwest Ada for incorporation. The ordinance annexes land described as 218 feet off the north half of the southwest quarter and the east half of the section six in township three north, range six east. Action immediate after petitions signed by residents owning a majority of the acres. Other routine business discussed abatements and claims.
TVA heads into a showdown with Commonwealth and Southern as contract terms expire for power interchange. Directors refuse to renew provisions that set non competitive sale areas and require guarantees against TVA competition in areas it previously served. Probert of CA Chesapeake and Ohio died in Los Angeles. In November 1936, 21 airlines carried 96,019 passengers, 5,639,008 miles, and 751,899 pounds express across the continental U S.
Governor Murphy presided over a four and a half hour cordial conference with William Knudsen and union leaders John L. Lewis and Homer Martin as National Guardsmen stood guard at Fisher No. 2 and Chevrolet plants. No agreement was reached, with statements deferred to the governor and talks planned for 9 a.m. tomorrow.
George Butler piloted the Skipalong through dangerous currents on the Mississippi to reach an island above Memphis. In twelve hours he ferried 37 residents including three babies to safety, guiding them downriver to Memphis in an hour and a half. Butler, a river veteran, declined praise.
The flooded Mississippi River crest neared Cairo as engineers feared further rises while 41 flatcars with dirtied sacks stood inside the levee system ready to plug breaks. Red Cross relief expands in Arkansas as 200,000 displaced. Gov Bailey orders full relief effort.
County and city officers pursued two men driving a Plymouth coupe stolen from Mainard Oil at Wewoka on Wednesday night. Roy Keller and Paul Corbin intercepted the vehicle east of Colbert, forced it into a sand bank, and fired as the occupants fled toward a field and woods. A posse conducted a widespread search with no trace reported early this morning.
B P Smith of Seminole county was fatally injured near Rofr Tuesday when gasoline in a metal barrel exploded as he melted ice from the barrel with a torch. He died about midnight at a focal clinic after skull fractures and other injuries. Chadwick Funeral Home to handle arrangements. he believed the barrel held water.
A 1 year old farm hand Wes Johnson was found dead with bullet wounds after being seized from jail by armed men in Headland. Reports say a mob abducted him from Abbeville jail. The girl victim is the farmer's daughter in Tumbleton. Judge Mitchell confirmed the incidents and related a separate Oklahoma divorce bill proposal reducing residence to 42 days.
Oklahoma City February hearing on a broadened sales tax law saw Rep. Tom Kight clash with B. W. Smartt of the Retail Merchants association over tax details. Smartt warned of a 1-2 percent increase possible and advocated limiting the tax, while Kight pressed for practical implementation. Mrs. Frazier led objections to the oleomargarine tax, noting health and cost concerns, with Dallas representative A. L. Ward saying the law harmed cotton seed demand. Holdenville High won a basketball tourney at Ada with captain C B Stanley receiving the ward trophy, as Wolverines posted four wins in the Central conference.

Louisville reports 221 deaths and 230,009 homeless with about 390 million in Kentucky damages. Ashland 700 homeless. Evansville 1 death and 26,500 homeless. Cincinnati area 14 flood deaths and 15 million in damages. Vicksburg notes deaths and mass evacuation amid rising water.
Kansas City dispatch reports Robert Kenyon, 29, confessed to killing Dr. J. C. Davis of Willow Springs after luring him on a false medical call. Kenyon led investigators to Davis’s body in an Ozark thicket and sought $5,000 ransom. Police described the suspect as a pale, 120‑pound farmer’s son, 5'8". The case ties to the murder of Charles Mattgon of Tacoma, Wash. and involved Davis’s kidnapping motive and a stolen Rolla car found at the Grimmett farm.
Deputy U S marshal Al Stanfield and Pontotoc deputy Alvis Jones were shot by a suspect during a routine stop on South Mississippi avenue by Hayes school. The gunman fled south in a car as officers chased him toward Ada. Stanfield, Jones, and Shockley pursued on Highway 12 and 48 13, with Stanfield wounded in three places and Jones fatally hit. The suspect, later identified as Jack Scott, was captured near Atoka after a dramatic pursuit and exchange of shots.
