The Agriculture Department announced immediate federal indemnities for hogs destroyed or exposed to brucellosis. Breeding swine qualify at 25 dollars per head for registered or crossbred stock and 10 dollars for other breeding swine. Cattle indemnities are set at 50 dollars for grade cattle and 100 dollars for purebreds. Brucellosis is Bangs disease, not affecting meat.
Two weeks after starting a new round of U S grain buys the Soviet Union again enlarged purchases. Private exporters sold 600000 metric tons of corn and 200000 tons of wheat to the Soviets, lifting total 1977 78 deliveries to about 5.3 million tons as part of the 6 million ton annual commitment.
The Agriculture Department notes 92 percent of U S corn harvested by Nov 27 down from last year but ahead of most years. Soybeans at 88 percent vs 96 percent last year and 92 percent average. Snow and rain replenish soil moisture to adequate or surplus in most states.
