Harvey E Hopper Ross reports three dead birds found in a sack after two youths used a .22 rifle to shoot near his home Sunday killing at least a dozen birds around his homemade feeder. He kept a walnut tree feeder stocked with chicken scratch. He recalls how he enjoys feeding birds despite the incident.
The Associated Press reports a Charleston fire killed 12 children in the Walter Johnson family, eight boys and four girls aged 8 months to 20 years, all Negroes, blamed on an exploding oil heater. Separate fires killed six in Spring Lake Michigan and two sisters, Michelle Johnson, 5, and Joretta, 3, in Muncie Indiana.
Mary Jo Sanders a 17 year old senior at Ross High School in Pontotoc County leads a Holstein dairy herd. She has won multiple 4 H and fair prizes including grand championships and a Hall of Fame honor. She balances farm chores with school and recently earned a trip to the National Dairy Conference in Chicago.
Susie Elizabeth McCormick, longtime Ada millinery department head at Katz Department Store and active Eastern Star member, died Tuesday after five weeks of illness and a fall that caused a broken hip. Born in Winfield Missouri, she moved to Ada in 1918, retiring from Thomson’s Book Store in 1958 after 14 years. She served as past matron of Ada Chapter 78, grand Esther to Missouri, and mentored Bowed girls in the Rainbow program. Her church work and numerous offices marked a life of service the community honored.
A federal fugitive, 23 year old Jimmy Richard Bowers, was arrested at an Ada motel early Saturday by Sheriff Burl Griffin, Police Chief Homer Gosnell, their deputies and FBI agents including J. R. Field. Bowers and his father were taken into custody without incident and will face arraignment.
The holiday traffic toll across the nation neared 300 deaths with final tallies awaited. Officials said the two day period produced about one fatality every ten minutes and risk rose sharply on Christmas Day compared with the preceding 24 hours.
At the Homer intersection on SH 12 Thursday, two separate crashes within 30 minutes injured three people. Barbara Nicholl 45 Ada was rear ended by Harry Martin 61 Burkburnett Texas and both were treated at Valley View Hospital. A pickup driven by Calvin Loman 55 Ada struck a bicycle rider, injuring a six year old boy.
