Boll weevil life cycle and control guidance
In Oklahoma and elsewhere the boll weevil breeds only on cotton, overwinters as an adult beetle, and emerges with cotton sprouts. Eggs hatch in 2 3 days, larvae develop in squares or bolls over 7 12 days, with pupal stage 3 5 days. Up to four generations per season and millions of offspring possible. Control advice urges destroying cotton plants before first killing frost, via ploughing, uprooting, burning leaves, and avoiding post harvest pasturing, plus proper seed bed prep and early maturing varieties with frequent cultivation.
