A Stonewall man was found guilty of murder in connection with a drug-related fatality. The verdict followed a trial revealing details of the case and the involvement of the defendant, whose sentencing date was later set.
The jury found Ben Young guilty of murder in the August slaying of Ernest Austell, sentencing him to 40 years in the state penitentiary. Austell, a Stonewall druggist and Young’s sister’s husband, was shot in his store after a confrontation about family troubles. Young claimed self defense, saying Austell advanced with an ice pick and a pistol was at a table. St Louis Dec 5 Jerome Herman Dean star right handed pitcher known as Dizzy Dean signed his 1935 contract for salary terms. Sam Keadon president of the Cardinals confirmed the signing and sent the contract by mail. Dean had asked for 25000 dollars and had threatened to hold out.
Chapman was bound over to district court in a $2 500 bond after a preliminary hearing on grand larceny charges in Clay Jones court. He was arrested Nov 23 for allegedly taking a shotgun belonging to F W Tillack from a parked car. He has prior grand larceny convictions and acquittals. Lee faces petit larceny charges for taking eight gallons of gasoline from Martha Brittain.
