Gene McCarter, 11, of Centrahoma, was bitten by an 18 inch copperhead on August 26 while barefoot in a pasture. His father applied first aid and sped him to Ada for hospital treatment, where ice packing and careful care followed. Despite early amputation, doctors saved his life though the venom damaged the foot and leg, and reconstruction surgeries were performed.

Oklahoma closed its five day turkey season on November 15 with the first either sex hunt drawing higher participation but slightly lower success due to warm weather. State upland supervisor Paul Mace notes about 4,000 hunters may exceed last year’s 1,714 turkeys. Pheasant season ended November 21 after 17 days. Kay Noble and Caddo counties were new additions to the open areas. Spring turkey season runs April 14 to 18 in 33 counties and parts of another.
