Charles Ownby, a young farmer, has grown his herd to 53 head across Holstein Jersey and Guernsey breeds. He aims to fund college with dairy profits while managing asthma and a future in farming. He plans to enter the fair on September 10 and hopes to specialize one day.
Escapade ends with rescue as Oak Grove Ada police and OG&E workers try to save Charley the raccoon. The 10 year old owner Tommy Roberts and his dogged neighbors watch as the animal climbs a bois d arc tree, after a dramatic morning atop a power pole.
Monte Vista Road residents express gratitude to County Commissioner Dave Gray and crew at a 7 30 p m appreciation picnic in Wintersmith Park. About 50 workers and families attend after the road was de annexed east of Monte Vista to allow paving.
Ada Farm and Ranch Club sponsors a 65 head feedlot test with steers entered by local cattlemen including Murray Corbin and Grady Harris. Calves weighed Aug 15 range 425 to 500 pounds for about 150 days or until low choice grade. U S D A grader and Oklahoma Extension Service will evaluate carcasses. 4-H fair prep underway for Pontotoc County Free Fair Sept 10 to 12 with extensive club exhibits and booth displays open to public.
Roff school opens this fall with new enrollment area expanding to 154 square miles after annexation of the Fitzhugh district and nearby Hickory Palmer and Oak Grove regions. Transportation adds a 48 passenger bus and two 36 passenger buses.
